Vale Makybe Diva

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia & Aushorse join the global racing and breeding community in mourning the passing of the incomparable Makybe Diva.

A once-in-a-generation champion, Makybe Diva etched her name into Australian sporting history as the only horse to win three consecutive Melbourne Cups. Her courage, stamina and extraordinary will to win captured the imagination of an entire nation, uniting Australians from all walks of life and creating moments of collective pride only rarely seen in modern sport. She forged a connection with the country not witnessed since Phar Lap.

Beyond her racing record, Makybe Diva became an enduring symbol of excellence and resilience. In retirement, she was cherished as both matriarch and ambassador for the thoroughbred breed, continuing to inspire admiration from breeders, owners and racing fans alike.

TBA & Aushorse CEO Andrew Hore-Lacy said Makybe Diva’s legacy extended far beyond her remarkable list of victories.

“Few horses transcend racing in the way Makybe Diva did. She was a champion in every sense: courageous, brilliant and universally admired,” said Mr Hore-Lacy.

“She brought Australians together in moments that will live long in the memory, and her legacy will endure not only in our breeding industry, but in the national story of Australian sport.”

Our thoughts are with Tony Santic, his family, and the team at Makybe Stud who cared for her so devotedly throughout her life.
