Thinking about applying for the Aushorse Graduate Program?
We’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions below to help you understand how the program works and what to expect.
The Aushorse Program welcomes individuals from all backgrounds. The only prerequisite is that students have an interest in the thoroughbred industry and are keen to pursue a career in racing, breeding or wagering.
The Aushorse Program is a national initiative that is open to students from all Australian states and territories.
This program is free for all students and includes all teaching materials and activities during the two-week intensive learning block.
Students are responsible for their own travel to and from Melbourne for this period. There will be limited accommodation available for students from interstate or regional Victoria.
Students will also be responsible for arranging their own travel to and from their internship locations, as well as their accommodation during the six-week internship period.
While a job offer isn’t guaranteed, completing the Aushorse Graduate Program gives you a strong advantage when it comes to securing a role in the industry. In fact, 90% of our graduates are now working in full-time roles across the thoroughbred sector. The combination of practical experience, professional connections and a reference from your internship employer makes this program a powerful launchpad for your career.
Yes — you’ll be paid during your six-week industry placement, with the exact amount set by your host employer. The two-week learning block at Flemington Racecourse is an unpaid component, but it’s an incredible opportunity to learn directly from leading figures across racing, breeding and wagering, and to build connections that often lead to future job opportunities.
If you’re from interstate or regional Victoria and don’t have accommodation in Melbourne, we’ll provide information about suitable options and costs once final numbers are confirmed.
For internships located away from your home, accommodation arrangements are generally the participant’s responsibility, although some host organisations may be able to assist or provide housing options.
No — applicants must have completed their degree in 2024 or 2025. The program requires full-time participation during both the two-week learning block and the six-week internship, so you’ll need to be available to commit to the full eight weeks.
Internship placements are coordinated by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia and are matched to each participant’s background, skills and interests. While we can’t guarantee specific placements, we’ll do our best to take personal preferences and career goals into account.
Once applications close on Friday 14 November, a shortlist of candidates will be invited to interviews in mid to late November. Successful applicants will then be offered a place in the 2026 program.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome in the first week of December, giving plenty of time to prepare before the program begins in late January 2026.
