Stallion Manager

Australia is home to some of the world’s leading thoroughbred stallions, and stallion managers play a key role in their care, management and presentation.

This role involves overseeing the day-to-day care of stallions, managing a skilled team of staff and ensuring each horse remains in peak physical and mental condition.

During the breeding season, the stallion barn is one of the busiest areas on a stud farm. Stallion managers are responsible for coordinating coverings, managing safety and welfare, and working closely with the broader farm team to ensure mares and stallions are handled professionally and with care.

Foaling Manager

Foaling managers oversee the care of pregnant mares and newborn foals during one of the most important times of the breeding season.

Their work is often compared to midwifery, involving the close monitoring of mares through late pregnancy, assistance during foaling and ensuring both mare and foal receive the care they need in the hours and days after birth.

Foaling managers work closely with stud veterinarians and farm staff, particularly when mares have difficult pregnancies or newborn foals require extra support. It is a highly responsible role that combines practical horsemanship, attention to detail and a strong focus on welfare.

Yearling Manager

Yearling managers oversee the care, development and education of young horses during an important stage between foalhood and maturity.

This role involves helping yearlings grow into well-handled, confident horses through careful management, consistent routines and patient education. Responsibilities can include managing feeding and exercise programs, monitoring growth and development, coordinating farrier and veterinary care, and teaching yearlings key handling skills.

On many farms, yearling managers also play an important role in preparing yearlings for public auction, ensuring they are presented in peak condition and confident in the sales environment, from being groomed and handled to parading calmly for prospective buyers.

Stud Secretary

It takes a highly organised and skilled team of people in the office to manage the logistics and provide administrative support for farms to run successfully. As stud secretary, you’ll oversee the daily running of the stud office and become the primary point of contact for booking mares into stallions for service. You’ll work closely with the stud manager and be responsible for keeping veterinary records up to date, tracking paddock movements and organising transport. You may also be asked to control accounts and communications with clients.

Nomination Sales

Farms that stand stallions usually have a nominations team responsible for promoting the farm’s stallions and working closely with breeders.

In this role, you will help breeders assess which stallions may best suit their mares, taking into account pedigree, conformation, commercial goals and racing potential.

Nominations roles involve strong relationship-building skills, industry knowledge and regular contact with breeders, bloodstock agents and farm clients. The role can also involve attending major bloodstock sales and race meetings, making it a highly connected and people-focused career pathway.

Bloodstock Agent

Bloodstock agents provide specialist advice to breeders, owners and investors on the selection, purchase and management of thoroughbreds.

This role requires a strong understanding of conformation, pedigree, performance, market trends and commercial value. Bloodstock agents may be engaged to inspect and purchase weanlings, yearlings, mares or racehorses, advise on mating plans, or help clients manage their breeding and racing interests.

Bloodstock agents attend sales and race meetings across Australia and may also have opportunities to work internationally, making it a highly connected role for those with strong industry knowledge, judgement and communication skills.
