Research funded through the AgriFutures Thoroughbred Horses Program is guided by the program’s five-year Research, Development and Extension Plan. The AgriFutures website provides a list of current and completed projects, along with further detail about the program.
The plan identifies four priority areas for investment:
Thoroughbred horse welfare, workforce safety and environmental sustainability
Projects in this area focus on supporting best practice horse welfare, improving workforce health and safety, and helping the industry better understand and manage its environmental impact.
Thoroughbred breeding
This priority supports research that aims to improve breeding outcomes, including stallion fertility, mare pregnancy, foal health, pregnancy loss and the use of yearling investigations such as x-rays and endoscopy.
Workforce, industry and community engagement
Projects in this area support industry training, career pathways, research extension and engagement with industry participants and the broader community. This includes work to better understand the economic and social contribution of the thoroughbred breeding industry.
Thoroughbred diseases and parasites
This priority focuses on reducing the impact of priority endemic diseases and parasites, improving antimicrobial and parasite treatment stewardship, and strengthening the industry’s preparedness for emerging disease risks.
Together, these priority areas help ensure levy-funded research is practical, industry-focused and directed towards the long-term sustainability of the Australian thoroughbred breeding industry.
