1. Buying your Thoroughbred at Auction |
|
|
A beginners guide to buying at Auction |
|
What to Do First
Before
you consider buying, do your "homework". This means getting
as much information and advice as possible before you invest. To do
this get in contact with a bloodstock agent or a trainer of your
choice.
Contact the sales company and introduce yourself to one of their sales staff and discuss your options. They will be able to answer any queries that you may have. From this they can introduce you to trainers, breeders and various people that you will need to know. Sales Companies inspect each horse individually before acceptance into the sale, therefore their consultants will be able to give you an idea of how each horse has improved. Your consultant will introduce you to the accounts department; here you can let them know of your intentions and method of payment. Most importantly, be sure to have your finances organised and ready to pay on the day of the sale.
Once you have gone through the sale catalogue and decided on which horses you like, the next step is to go and inspect them. To do this it is advisable to go along with a bloodstock agent or trainer remembering that too much advice or information is never enough. At yearling sales, horses generally arrive at the complex several days before the auction day. This gives prospective buyers a chance to walk around and inspect the horses at their leisure.
Auction
Day SALE-O, SALE-O, SALE-O !!!!! This call will be heard around the complex as an introduction to the sale calling for all prospective purchasers to make their way to the sale ring. Terms and conditions of the sale will be read out approximately ten minutes before the first lot enters the ring. You will notice various people from William Inglis & Son standing around the ring, they will be spotting the various bids from the crowd. Make sure you can see them and they can see you.
Bidding on a horse is relatively easy. Once your chosen horse enters the ring the auctioneer will introduce the horse and ask for an opening bid. You can bid as many times as you desire. To bid, hold your catalogue up in the air and wave towards the nearest "bid-spotter", he/she will acknowledge your bid by calling YES ! to the auctioneer. The bidding will continue until there are no more willing bidders and the fall of the auctioneer's hammer will determine the sale of each particular lot. If you have offered the highest price at the fall of the hammer, a bid-spotter will come over and introduce him/herself and hand you a sale confirmation docket. This will be your proof of purchase to our accounts staff. Fill in your details, (contact number, address, etc.), you will also be able to insure your horse at the same time. Take your acknowledgement to the "Sale-Day Office". Here you will be able to pay for the horse and organise transport. There will be a number of transport companies to choose from or Inglis can suggest one.
After you have settled for the horse and organised transport, you will be off on a wonderful adventure into the world of thoroughbred racing. The fun has only just begun. The trainer you have chosen will help you with agistment and breaking-in. You will have to decide on your racing colours and name of the horse.
