Premier 2004 -- Market Leaders |
11/02/2004 |
|
The
2004 Premier Yearling Sale set new records as the highest grossing yearling
sale ever conducted in the state of
Victoria
. After two days of brisk selling,
the aggregate had soared to $18, 284,000 (up 30%) with 376 yearlings
averaging $48,627 (up 19%).
Staff
and management at William Inglis and Son are delighted by the overwhelming
success of this sale, a clear justification of our faith in the Victorian
market and its great potential.
When
the company first expanded into
Victoria
in 1994 gross receipts for the
Premier Yearling Sale totalled just $5.53 million with 291 lots selling at
an average price of $19,018.
Fast
forward ten years and Victorian breeders now have a national showcase for
their premium bloodstock attracting the leading buyers from throughout
Australia
and overseas. Some 33 yearlings sold for $100,000 or better at this year’s
sale giving many vendors a reason for post-Christmas celebrations.

Arrowfield
Stud based Redoute’s Choice finished on top here with five yearlings
averaging $98,000, his star achiever being a colt from Courtroom Sweetie
going to
Newcastle
trainer Paul Perry for $160,000.
The Redoute’s Choice juggernaut now rolls on to
Sydney
at Easter where 36 yearlings have
been catalogued from some of the finest matrons in the land.
Woodlands
Stud featured twice in the top five, with young gun Commands again proving
popular and the ill-fated Grand Lodge (USA) enjoying an outstanding sale
with four of his stock fetching over $100,000.
The
real story of this sale in regards to stallion statistics is of course the
Blue Gum Farm based phenomenon Encosta de Lago.
Make
no mistake, this Group One winning son of Fairy King (USA) is on the fast
track to the top of the stallion tree. His 29 yearlings generated $2,472,500
in turnover at an average price of $85,258, a substantial return for
breeders who supported him at a fee of $12,000.
His
sale-topping colt from True Believer was knocked down to Bart Cummings for
$320,000, the highest price yet paid for an Encosta de Lago yearling at
public auction.
Cummings
was quoted after the purchase as being “very impressed” with Encosta de
Lago as a sire and there are certainly plenty of people in the industry who
would share that view. Predictions are rife that Encosta de Lago will be the
one to fill the void left by Danehill (USA) and if that situation comes to
pass then $320,000 will seem but a drop in the ocean.
English
2000
Guineas
winner King’s Best (USA) took
the honours among the first season sires.
The
Darley Stud based son of Kingmambo had seven yearlings average $72,857
highlighted by a good-looking colt from former brilliant juvenile Catnipped
which made $155,000 to the bid of astute bloodstock agent Mark Pilkington.
Hometown
hero Testa Rossa also made a positive impression on the market with a large
selection of 18 youngsters averaging $55,472 including two that sold for
$105,000 (filly from Novella) and $100,000 (colt from Ginette).

Waterhouse claims Rory's Jester colt |
10/02/2004 |
|
Randwick trainer Gai Waterhouse outlasted spirited bidding at the 2004 Wm Inglis & Son Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands yesterday, to claim a strong chestnut colt by champion sprinting Australian sire Rory’s Jester out of Volkster, by the champion New Zealand sire Volksraad. The colt was signed for by Peter Morley’s Belhus Racing Stables from West Australia and he will be trained by Waterhouse.
Volkster, a winner at 1000m, is a sister to the South African winner and Group I placed Champion Chestnut. This is the family of Group I winner Getting Closer and multiple Listed winner Instrumental.
Waterhouse Stable Racing Manager Steve Brem said:
He is a nice horse from a fresh young mare.
We have had a lot of success with the stock of Rory’s Jester in the last couple of years, he added mentioning How Funny, Time Out and the stable’s current two-year-old Tides Of Fun.
Volksraad is a sire of capacity and his mares are young.
He was definitely bought with the $1m Inglis race next year in mind and he is one of the stronger and early horses in the
sale, said Brem.
Morley has three horses in Waterhouse’s stable and he intends to syndicate the Rory’s Jester colt through his West Australian client base.

Dubai Destination latest addition to Darley Ranks |
01/02/2004 |
|
Dubai Destination, one of Sheikh Mohammed’s favourite horses, will shuttle to Darley Australia in 2004.
Acclaimed throughout his career, Dubai Destination was the last horse to beat Rock Of Gibraltar before his run of seven G1 wins. His finest day came at Royal Ascot last June when he sprinted clear of a star-studded line-up - Hawk Wing included - to win the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes (1,600m) by four lengths in a near course record. His southern hemisphere fee has yet to be announced, but he stands at £25,000 at Darley’s Newmarket base, Dalham Hall Stud- alongside Oasis Dream he is the highest-priced first season sire in Britain.
A son of Kingmambo, Dubai Destination was sold for US$1.5 million as a yearling in Kentucky. Originally named Copernicus, his name was changed by Sheikh Mohammed, provoking comparisons with the great Dubai Millennium. After his initial victory, at 3-1 on at Newmarket in the summer of his juvenile year, those comparisons looked justified. And his next start, in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes (1,400m) at Doncaster against Rock Of Gibraltar, drew rave reviews. Held up at the back of the field he quickened past the rest with spine-tingling ease. Timeform, Europe’s most authoritative race readers, wrote:
The ability to make good opponents look much worse than they actually are is the hallmark of a topnotch performer. Dubai Destination made Rock Of Gibraltar look pretty
ordinary. He was instantly installed antepost favourite for the 2,000 Guineas, but an injury picked up while wintering in Dubai, cost him his Classic bid. He returned as a four-year-old and put up two more hugely impressive performances. He won a one-mile conditions race by six lengths, beating Group 2 horses. Then came his extraordinary wide-margin Group 1 win at Royal Ascot, less than half a second outside the record. That day he stamped himself one of Europe’s finest milers and lived up to his exalted reputation as one of Godolphin’s most talented horses. Dubai Destination has a blue-chip pedigree. His dam is a half-sister to the exceptional Japan trained sprinter Agnes World, and he is from the family of world-class stallion, Red Ransom. He also inherits a remarkable tradition of sire power: the seven stallions on his three-generation pedigree chart average an exceptional 12 per cent Stakes winners to foals.
Oliver Tait, Manager of Darley Australia, said, Dubai Destination has the looks, the pedigree and the racing performance to make him an enormously desirable stallion prospect for Australasian breeders. I was privileged to see his win in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot last year and the horse was simply dominant. With the Champion two-year-old sire Cape Cross also added to our roster, we’re doing our level best to bring the world’s finest stallions to Australia. We’re absolutely committed to standing horses that give breeders the chance to excel. It’s all part of the Darley
deal.

Regimental Gal Follows in the Footsteps of Dad |
08/02/2004 |
|
Widden Stud received the best possible promotion for new recruit General Nediym when his star first crop daughter Regimental Gal became Australia’s latest equine millionaire when, at just her eighth race start, she blitzed a field of Australia’s best sprinters in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes at Caulfield on Sunday.
In becoming the first Group 1 winner for General Nediym Regimental Gal emulated the feat of her sire who took the Lightning Stakes in 1998.
The 3yo chestnut filly is building a record that closely mirrors her sire as she also claimed the Magic Millions 2yo Classic and the San Domenico Stakes (G2), two races General Nediym had won six years previously.
With Steven King taking over the reigns from the suspended Michael Rodd Regimental Gal finished resolutely down the outside rail to defeat the favourite our Egyptian Raine by a neck with Mistegic making a pleasing return 1 3/4-lengths back in third.
Regimental Gal cost trainer Shaun Dwyer just $16,500 at the 2002 Magic Millions Premier Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast. Her record now stands at six wins and one second from eight starts for earnings of $1,171,100
Regimental Gal is the third foal produced by the unraced Yallah Prince mare Hallaya a half-sister to Narooma Guy (Genghiz) the winner of $193,140 with 14 wins from 89 starts and placed in the Listed Caloundra Anniversary Cup before finishing his career over the jumps.
While not producing a stakes winner for several generations the family of Hallaya descends from a prolific family nurtured by the Baxter of family of Macquarie Stud at Wellington NSW. Miss Alaska (Biscay), the granddam of Hallaya won four city races and was runner-up in the Black Opal Stakes. She is a sister or half sister to 7 winners including the stakes placed Biscapol and Blazing Hooves while her non-winning daughter Lady Hialeah (Tanzor) produced the multiple stakes winner and group 1 placed Red Chiffon (Sovereign Red).
Stacey Griffiths, who was working as a secretary at Ron Ashdown’s Glengarry Stud, purchased Hallaya for just $500 at a Glengarry reduction sale in 1999. When a disabling illness forced Griffiths to leave Glengarry, Ron and Jenny Ashdown rewarded their loyal employee with a free service to Nediym but when the son of Shareef Dancer was injured Hallaya was served by Nediym’s champion son General Nediym, then serving his first season at Glengarry Stud.
Following a divorce and Griffiths’ continuing health problems, Hallaya has not been sent to a stallion for three years after foaling Regimental Gal but last Spring she ventured to Widden Stud where she was served by Belong To Me.
General Nediym has seven yearlings going through the upcoming Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale:
Lot 31 b.c Smytzer's Magic (Monde Bleu): Line-bred to the mighty Northern Dancer, this colt is the third foal of a city placed daughter of the smart mare Daughter's Charm. Descendant of the fine mare Meer Rose, also ancestress of Empire Rose and Grosvenor.
Lot 58 b.c Sunday Morning (Heart Of Darkness): 3/4 brother to the Group 2 Maribyrnong Plate winner Ra Sun from the family of the evergreen Group One winning sprinter Flavour. Boasts a duplication of the influential mare Aurora, as do many of General Nediym's best to date.
Lot 74 b.c Tirol Reign (Tirol): Second living foal of a lightly raced half sister to the Listed winner Rain At Bay and to the dams of Rain Dance Lady and Magic Bird. Family of the top class stayers Rain Lover and Rain Gauge. One for pedigree enthusiasts, with duplications of the fine mares Commotion and Sister Sarah, this colt is a direct descendant of Canterbury Pilgrim.
Lot 96 ch.c Violetta (Rigoletto): Half brother to the multiple city winner Il Trovatore out of a sprint winning half sister to the Listed winner Smitten. Family of the South African Group One winners Crimson Palace and Royal Glitter.
Lot 176 ch.f Cadinski (Kinski): Three times winning dam has produced three winners from four to race, including the city winners Glint Of Heart and Just The Best and this filly's lightly raced full brother Rugger. Dam is a half sister to the dual Listed winner Miss Stephenson.
Lot 196 Cheriegal (Zeditave): Bred for pace on both sides, this filly is a 3/4 sister to the recent city winner Bold Cheree and her dam has produced six winners from her first six foals. Dam is a half sister to the Linlithgow Stakes winner Rass Flyer and this filly is line-bred to the outstanding mare Aurora.
Lot 344 ch.f Jacksonville (Jackson Square): Daughter of a half sister to the Group 3 winner Happy Cracker. Grandam is the triple Group winner Guajira and this filly is line-bred to the fine mare Commotion.
Two General Nediym colts will also grace the ring in the Premier II Sale:
Lot 529 ch.c Sweet Anchor (Sea Anchor): Half brother to two winners including the metropolitan winner Sea Attack from a New Zealand family whose members include the stakes winners Maccadons Dream, Conan and Cool Rock. Boasts a duplication of the influential mare Aurora.
Lot 558 b.c Born To Thrill (Twig Moss): Has an exciting pedigree, being line-bred to his own third dam Reticella (General Nediym's grandam) and his fifth dam, the Auckland Cup winning outstanding broodmare Froth. Family of the Group One winners Horlicks, Brew, Military Plume, Interstellar and Laelia.

Big Payday For Public Opinion |
08/02/2004 |
|
The Queensland flag flew proudly over Flemington on Sunday with Regimental Gal and Public Opinion taking $494,000 back to the Sunshine State.
The Gillian Heinrich-trained Pubic Opinion became the most important winner from the first crop of Lomar Park Stud’s Danehill stallion Arena when he came down the outside fence to win the $337,000 2004 Inglis Premier (1200m).
Glen Colless guided Public Opinion to a 1 ¼-lengths over Courtney’s Cuddles (Brief Truce) with Here To Win (General Nediym) a ½-nech back in third place.
Having his third career start Public Opinion made his debut on October 11 when finishing third to General Patton in the Hopeful Stakes at Eagle Farm. Given a brief letup Pubic Opinion scored an impressive 2 ½-length win in an 1100m 2yo handicap at Doomben on January 17. His three starts has netted $254,000 in prizemoney a good return on the $32,500 Heinrich paid for Public Opinion at last year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. A half brother to two winners Public Opinion is the fourth foal of the Melbourne winning Last Tycoon mare Rothchild.
The victory is certain to keep interest right to the very end of the Premier Sale in Melbourne where Public Opinion’s half brother by the red hot Encosta De Lago is due to sell as lot number 508, three from the end of the select portion of the sale.
The former Woodlands stud colourbearer Arena retired to Lomar Park as the highest earning son of Danehill to go to stud in Australia. While he did not have the dazzling speed of a lot of Danehill’s he embodies all the fine qualities that made his sire the most influential stallion to stand in Australia in the latter part of the century. Arena ran five times at two with four of his starts coming in stakes races. His juvenile performances included a third to the eventual Golden Slipper winner Prowl in the Skyline Stakes (G3), third in the Pago Pago Stakes (G2), fifth in the AJC Sires' Produce Stakes (G1) and fourth in the AJC Champagne Stakes (G1).
John Hawkes sent Arena around in 15 races, 14 of which were stakes races, 8 of those Group 1 races. He raely ran a bad race defeating Sky Heights in the VRC Derby (G1) in the Autumn then bouncing back in the Spring to defeat Shinkansea and Dracula in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes then was tenacious when defeating lawyer in a dramatic Canterbury Guineas (G1). That season he also won the Gloaming Stakes (G2) and Hill Stakes (G2) and placed in the AJC Derby (G1), Spring Champion Stakes (G1), Rosehill Guineas (G1) and the Mercedes Classic (G1).
He ran 7 times at Group 1 level as a four-year old finishing runner-up in the Australian Cup-GR1, Ranvet Stakes (G1) and Mercedes Classic (G1).
A strongly made bay with typical Danehill colouring, Arena is rangier than most sons of his sire. He is blessed with faultless conformation, devoid of the scourge of being back at the knees, which admittedly did not seem to hinder a good deal of Danehill’s stakes winners.
Arena’s dam Lee’s Bid was tiny chestnut with a huge heart that was purchased by the Inghams after running second to the champion Triscay in the AJC Oaks. The daughter of the Blushing Groom stallion Tawfiq then won the Group 1 South Australian Oaks before finishing second in the QTC Derby and QTC Oaks again behind Triscay.

Sons of Woodman Making a Mark |
08/02/2004 |
|
Woodman failed to make an impact in five seasons at stud in Australia but two of his regally bred New Zealand based sons, Bahhare and Mellifont have come up with important winners in the last week.
At Morphetville on Saturday the Richard Jolly-trained Deprivation (Mellifont) scored a surprisingly easy 3-1/2 lengths win in the Group 2 Breeders' Stakes.
Having his fourth career start Deprivation made a winning debut at Murray Bridge on November 5 then ten days later finished a 3 ¼-length second to Danehill colt Way West at Cheltenham. Shortly before Depravation went to the post for the Breeders’ Stakes Way West made that form look could with an all the way win in the Blue Diamond Prelude (G3) at Caulfield. At his third race start Depravation finished third, beaten a length and a half behind two of his Breeders’ Stakes combatants Golden Pedigree (Gold Brose) and Luna Spur (Flying Spur).
That result saw Deprivation start at 20/1 but he never looked in danger of defeat running his rivals of their legs clocking 1:10.18 in defeating Barely A Moment (Gilded Time) by 3 ½-lengths with Marine D’Or ¾-length back in third.
A $42,000 purchase by Shane Moore Bloodstock at the 2003 New Zealand Bloodstock Select yearling Sale, Deprivation comes from the fourth crop of Paramount Lodge’s Mellifont. He is the third named foal and second winner out of the King’s Island mare Goodness Me who was the thirteenth and final foal produced by the prolific broodmare Cinnator (Monitor).
Goodness Me did not earn a cent in her two career starts as four-year old. She is a half sister to the Villiers Stakes (G2), Tramway H (LR) and STC Christmas Cup (LR) winner Tuna Too (Music Teacher).
Cinnator is a half sister to the magnificent looking chestnut Triton (Pakistan) the Syd Brown-trained galloper of the early seventies who staged a memorable performance to defeat local hero Gunsynd in the 1972 Epsom Handicap then added the All Aged Stakes before going on to win the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm that year.
A lightly raced winner in America Mellifont is bred on the Woodman/Nijinsky cross that produced Champagne Stakes (G2) winner Bahhare the former Rich Hill Stud shuttle stallion that sired Successor who last week took New Zealand’s richest juvenile race the $500,000 Mercedes Super Bonus Classique at Te Rapa.
A half brother to the top class Bahri (Riverman), the top of the 1995 International 3YO Classification (Mile) with wins in the Ascot Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes (G1) and Royal Ascot St James's Palace Stakes (G1), Bahhare is out of the stakes-placed Nijinsky mare Wasnah a half-sister to Winglet the dam of Ajina (Strawberry Road) the 1997 Champion USA 3YO Filly with 7 wins for earnings of US$1,327,915 including the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), and Belmont Mother Goose Stakes (G1). Wasnah is also a three-quarter sister to the $19million stud success Jugah (Northern Dancer) and the Robert Sangster import Northern Plain who won the Group 3 Tetrach Stakes at the Curragh and the 1987 Listed Rosehill Cup. Unfortunately Northern Plain proved to be almost infertile producing just four live foals in his four years at stud.
Like Bahhare, Mellifont lacks for little on the female side. His dam Fairy Dancer (Nijinsky) is a three-quarter sister to Sadler’s Wells, Fairy King, Tate Gallery, Fairy Gold and Perugino.
With his fourth crop on the racetrack Mellifont has to date 54 winners from 102 starters for earnings of over $3million. He is the sire of three stakes winners, Wellington Stakes (G3) winner Native Song, CJC Canterbury Belle Stakes (LR) winner Pledge and Deprivation.
Mellifont stands at Paramount Lodge Matamata for a fee of NZ$4,500.
