57.. Byron Rogers Resigns At Arrowfield

 19/11/2003

Arrowfield Stud’s manager of stallion nominations Byron Rogers resigned yesterday. Rogers explained: I have had 8 great years at Arrowfield & enjoyed every moment of it, but it is time to move on & do other things. Being involved in some way in developing the careers of Flying Spur & Danzero from the ground up, & making Snippets into a perennial leading sire was rewarding. The continual rise of End Sweep in Australia is personally satisfying, as he was a horse that I placed a lot of faith in from the start. I am sure that young guns Hussonet, Orientate & French Deputy will continue the Arrowfield tradition of producing leading Australian stallions, as they have been specifically selected for our country.

56.. Bullets go off in Sydney & Melbourne

 18/11/2003

Bite the Bullet, the Baramul Stud, Widden Valley based source of winners on Saturday at Sandown (Mythological) and Rosehill Gardens (Magic Marvo), is a close relation of Honor Grades, the sire of Adoration, a dominating winner at California’s Santa Anita on October 25 of the $2million Breeders’ Cup Distaff, a race for females three and up.

A sire who has also had good winners in Australia from visits to New Zealand, Honor Grades is a son of Danehill’s sire Danzig and the good Secretariat filly and superb producer Weekend Surprise. She is also dam of top American racehorses and sires A.P. Indy and Summer Squall.

On top of this Weekend Surprise is a half-sister to Lassie’s Lady, the Alydar mare who has supplied two stakes winners including Bite the Bullet and who was a half-sister to Spectacular Spy, a sire who was just starting to make a name when he died prematurely at Clearvale Stud, Bylong.

As both Bite the Bullet and Spectacular Spy are by the same giant of American racing, the Bold Ruler male line sire Spectacular Bid, they are three-quarter brothers. Like their sire, they both have been responsible for tough, sound horses.

Bite the Bullet was a more superior racehorse than Spectacular Spy, and also Honor Grades, winning five races including the Group 2 Sanford Stakes for two-year-olds at Saratoga and finishing third in the Group1 Arlington-Washington Futurity.

Used initially at Kingmaker Farm near Scone and only having restricted early opportunity, Bite the Bullet has risen up to be one of the most successful sires in NSW standing at fees under $10,000.

So far he has had some 159 winners, nearly 70% of his runners, for earnings of over $9.3million. He has16 stakes winners to his credit including Pleasure Giver (four Group wins including the AJC Hobartville Stakes and STC Theo Marks Stakes), Mica’s Pride and Perak Gold (both Group 3 winners) and Beaver (two Listed wins and runner up in the Group1 Canterbury Guineas).

55.. NSW Racing Supports TAB Merger ‘With Conditions

The main conditions are:

  • Governance of the NSW racing industry is not affected without the approval of NSWR;

  • A product fee is paid on fixed odds race wagering, in line with totalisator wagering;

  • Any changes to legislation are not detrimental to & maintain equivalent protections for the NSW racing industry; &

  • Sky Channel & Radio 2KY are divested from the merged organisation to another business acceptable to the NSW racing industry.

54.. Inglis Melbourne December Thoroughbred Sale

 18/11/2003

Catalogues are now available for the Inglis December Thoroughbred Sale (at Oaklands in Melbourne on December 5) featuring 214 mixed lots including 78 broodmares, 21 yearlings, 2 stallions, 7 unbroken stock & 106 tried racehorses. A highlight of the sale will be the reduction of racing stock from the Lloyd Williams Group (16 lightly-raced colts & geldings including metropolitan performer Applicant). Lindsay Park Stud will also offer a selection of young tried racehorses by popular sires such as Danzero, Fasliyev, Flying Spur, Hennessy, Jeune & Marauding. And the racehorse section includes metropolitan winners Legend Of Ace, Go Crazy & Unbridled Smile.

 53.. Inglis Graduates' HK Double

 17/11/2003

Inglis Sale graduates landed an impressive double at HK’s Sha Tin:

  • Expatriate Australian trainer John Size added a victory with the 4YO Anabaa-Snippets’ Show galloper Perfetto (a $120,000 buy at the 2001 Inglis Easter Sale); it was Perfetto’s 4th win to take his earnings past $430,000 in prize-money.

  • And racing for the 1st time in blinkers, San Lorenzo (a $40,000 purchase at the 2001 Inglis Premier Sale) added an impressive victory to his run of minor placings in his 5th race start; he is from the 1st Australian crop of Torrential (a US-bred Gr1-winning son of Gulch) & is also a half-brother to stakes-winning sprinter Winning Hand from prolific producer Tipped To Top (a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Vain).

52.. $4 Million HK Offer for Clangalang

 17/11/2003

AJC Derby winner Clangalang will remain in Australia after his owners knocked back an offer from Hong Kong for the dual-Gr1 winner yesterday, reported aapracingandsports.com.au. Trainer Gerald Ryan confirmed a substantial offer had been made for the 4YO, but he would remain in Australia & be prepared for a late autumn campaign after a well deserved spell. Clangalang won the Gr1 Epsom Handicap at Royal Randwick in Sydney 2 months ago, before heading to Melbourne for a 5th in the weight-for-age Gr1 Cox Plate; but unplaced recent runs in the Emirates Stakes & then Saturday’s Sandown Classic prompted connections to abandon plans to run him at the HK International meeting next month. However The Sydney Morning Herald reported managing part-owner Mick McDonald confirming the offer was $4 million & there was a fair chance the horse would be sold. We’ve told the prospective buyers that if they raised it a little, we would certainly be interested.

51.. Fields Of Omagh Heads For Asia

 17/11/2003

Meanwhile this year’s Gr1 Cox Plate winner Fields Of Omagh leaves Australia today with $7 million waiting if he wins the Japan & Hong Kong Cups, reported The Daily Telegraph. Fields of Omagh (trained by Tony McEvoy) will run in the $6.8 million Japan Cup (2400m) on November 30 where, as well as the $3.5 million 1st prize, there’s a $1.2 million bonus if he can complete the Cox Plate-Japan Cup double. A fortnight later, the 6YO will compete in the HK Cup which offers a $2.3 million winner’s cheque. McEvoy commented: He worked as well at Lindsay Park last week as he did before the Cox Plate. He’s going as good as he can go.

50.. Aust’s Elegant Fashion Wins HK International Cup Trial

 17/11/2003

In Hong Kong, former Australian mare Elegant Fashion (Danewin-Wily Trick, by Clever Trick) stormed home to win the Gr2 International Cup Trial (2000m) at Sha Tin, reported thoroughbredinternet.com. The 5YO mare (ridden by Douglas Whyte for expatriate Australian trainer David Hayes) defeated former French Group winner River Dancer & Raider. A triple Gr2 winner in Australia, Elegant Fashion won the Gr1 HK Derby earlier in the year & looks to peaking nicely for the HK International meeting in December. Elegant Fashion has now won 3 of her 9 HK starts since January, netting connections almost HK$17 million (A$3.4 million). Her 5-time Gr1-winning sire Danewin (Danehill-Cotehele House, by My Swanee) stands at Nasser Lootah's Emirates Park Stud in NSW.

49.. River Mist wins W.A. Guineas

 17/11/2003

When leading West Australian trainer George Daly outlaid $35,000 for a grey colt by Sir Pekan at the 2002 Magic Millions Adelaide Sale he was not paying a premium for a page of black-type or a pedigree dominated by commercial stallions.

But is no surprise that that colt, named River Mist, became a stakes winner himself when successful in the $125,000 Group 2 W. A. Guineas (1600m) at Belmont Park on Saturday.
What Daly was signing the ticket for was a colt by a stallion who now stands in Turkey out of a female family by stallions such as Kala Dancer and Old Crony where you needed to go back three generations to find the first stakes winner. But what Way also purchased was a colt from a true running family. His dam Dance Misty For Me (Kala Dancer) was a Sydney winner of five races who had enough class to finish runner-up in a Fernhill Handicap (LR). Her dam Misty Crony (Old Crony) was also a very useful racetrack performer winning five races in Sydney and the prized country two-year old feature theWellington Boot.

Misty Crony produced nine foals before earning her retirement in 2000. Eight of those nine foals reached the racetrack and all won. While none were stakes winners three, Dance Misty For Me, Misty Power (Papal Power) and Another Misty (Al Hareb) were stakes placed. While non of her foals were by stallions which the height of commerciality Misty Crony through tough, durable racehorses. The eight runners racked up a total of 275 starts between them with 49 wins led by Copper County (County) who has made 97 starts over eight seasons on the track for 18 wins and 29 placings for earnings of $250,220.

Misty Crony is out of the non-winning Swiftly Morgan mare Misty Kinneil the dam of eight winners from nine foals to race including Misty Crony’s sister Lady Violet (Old Crony), winner of four races in Melbourne. Before River Mist’s Guineas triumph this is where the first stakes winners showed up in the catalogue page.

Leading Newcastle based trainer Paul Perry ventured to the 1993 Inglis Premier sale where he purchased for $10,000 the first foal of Violet Lady, a colt by The Pug. Named Well Known he was a blistering fast if unsound galloper that won 12 0f his 18 starts including the AJC June Stakes (LR) and STC Civic H. (LR). Perry thought enough of Well Known to venture back to the same sale two years later to purchase his half brother, Notoire, a colt by Export Price. True to his breeding Notoire is still racing as a ten-year old. He has won eight of his 76 starts while earning $851,793. The highlight of his career came in the 1997 VRC Salinger Stakes (G1) where he defeated Rock You and another grand old warhorse Flavour. Notoire has won five stakes races in total including the VATC Schillaci Stakes (G2) while he has been runner-up in the VRC Lightning S. Gr 1 and AJC The Galaxy (G1).

River Mist’s sire Sri Pekan was a top-class two-year old in England winning five, including the Champagne Stakes (G2) and Richmond Stakes (G2), and running second once in his six starts. The son of Red Ransom did not get the take-up in Australia of most of the Coolmore stallions serving 65 mares in 1996 and 74 in 1997. He did not return the following year but when his first crop hit the ground running in Europe he returned to Australia in 1999 where he met a more enthusiastic response serving 135 mares. Unfortunately neither his European crops nor his first Australian crop went on to further success. He never returned to Australia and was eventually sold off to Turkey. River Mist comes from his final crop of foals.

The only stakes winner sired in Australia by Sri Pekan before River Mist was the MRC City of Glen Eira Cup (LR) winner Napping.

While River Mist may not have the most commercial of pedigrees his family has an enviable reputation of visiting the winners stall.

48.. Dangerous Makes Great Start to Stud Career

 17/11/2003

Deafen’s performance to win at Rosehill on Saturday was first season sire’s Dangerous, first 2yo to race this season.
Judging the young gelding, on type alone, Deafen is a prime example of the majority of progeny by Dangerous, which has been widely admitted particularly during the sales period earlier this year as one leading bloodstock agent was overheard as saying I’m yet to see an ordinary type by him!.

Owned and raced originally by Woodlands Stud, Dangerous stands in partnership with Chatswood Stud. Chatswood have had enormous success in recent years with their stallions kick-starting the careers of Flying Spur, Danzero, Ashkalani (IRE) (all since relocating to the Hunter Valley).

Dangerous looks set to continue the studs wonderful legacy of producing quality racehorses from the property which is nestled next to the Goulburn River (outskirts of Melbourne).

Dangerous has been extremely popular to breeders all over Australia, as well as locally and with the first of which the stud promises to be of many winners in the future.

There is nothing Dangerous with owning one, just racing against one of his progeny!

 46.. End Sweep’s 50 Wins In 44 Days

 14/11/2003

Arrowfield Stud’s ill-fated stallion End Sweep (a grandson of Mr Prospector) has had an extraordinary run since October 1: his progeny have won 50 races world-wide (including 4 stakes races plus a further 5 stakes placings). As a result, End Sweep (whose final Australian-bred crop will go through the yearling sales in 2004) has surged into the leading divisions of stallions in all countries where he has sired progeny:

  • In Australia & NZ, End Sweep is now Leading Australasian 2nd Crop Sire by winners, with 15 individual winners including stakes-winners Light Sweeper (Listed VRC The Seppelt Great Western) & Sarah Vee (Listed NZ Soliloquay Stakes & 2nd Gr1 NZ 2000 Guineas).

  • In Japan, End Sweep is Leading 1st Season Sire with 15 individual winners among his Japanese-conceived juveniles: including unbeaten 2YO filly Sweep Tosho (winner of the Gr3 KBS Kyoto Sho Fantasy Stakes).

  • Also in Japan, End Sweep’s 7YO US-bred son South Vigorous notched a Gr1 win in the JBC Sprint (1190m) on November 3 to become his sire’s 5th individual Gr1 winner.

  • Rounding off his spectacular year worldwide, End Sweep is destined to be crowned Leading North American Sire by winners in 2003: as the season comes to a close, End Sweep has sired 135 individual winners who have earned US$4.4 million prize-money.

45.. HKJC Cautious On EPO Test

 14/11/2003

Hong Kong Jockey Club senior racing chemist Terence Wan See-ming has warned that a test for the antibodies of erythropoietin is a "presumptive test" that could fall short of the required standard of proof for action against a trainer, reported the South China Morning Post newspaper. The warning follows developments in North America, where thoroughbredtimes.com reported New York, Delaware & Ontario have begun official tests for the antibodies associated with EPO; if found, horses are barred from performance until their systems are clean of the EPO antibodies. But the HKJC’s Wan warned: "Testing the reaction of the horse to a foreign protein is purely a presumptive test. There is always the possibility some other protein could have triggered a similar reaction." HKJC executive director of racing Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges added EPO’s effect in horse racing is exaggerated: "EPO is extremely harmful & even fatal to horses. We think there are a number of more imminent dangers (among drugs) & without going into detail, there are a number of tests we can do already for EPO. The US has this new confirmation method, but there are already a number of other methods in place. Australia has actually led the way & is ahead of the field in this regard. Engelbrecht-Bresges & Wan noted HK has not confirmed a single case of EPO usage.

 44.. Danewin Adds Dubai Winner

 14/11/2003

Emirates Park Stud stallion Danewin (Danehill-Cotehele House, by My Swanee) added an overnight winner at Dubai’s Nad Al Sheba track when his 6YO gelding Mr Magistrate (Danewin-Wild Thunder, by Our Poetic Prince) won over 1200m. Mr Magistrate (bred by Alex Cheung & Sunny Yam) is raced by Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.

43.. Winning Family Around The Globe

 14/11/2003

The last month has seen Group races around the world won by offspring of stallions from the same family, noted thoroughbredinternet.com. Australian Gr1 winners Flying Spur & Encosta de Lago plus South American pair Lode & Golden Voyager all trace directly to Fanfreluche (3 through her Listed winning daughter Grand Luxe).

  • Encosta de Lago (by Fairy King out of a half-sister to Flying Spur) has enjoyed a great run this year in Australia with 2 Gr1 winners: Delago Brom & last weekend's Emirates Stakes winner Titanic Jack. And his son Delzao is bidding for 6 straight wins in tomorrow's Sandown Guineas, while he’s also recorded an early season 2YO stakes-winner in Alinghi. Encosta De Lago stands at Blue Gum Farm in Victoria.

  • Arrowfield-based Golden Slipper winner Flying Spur has been among Australia’s leading sires since retiring to stud. In 2003 he has sired Gr2 Caulfield Sprint winner Blur & has stakes-winners in Europe (his son Steenberg landing the Wentworth Stakes at Doncaster in England on the final weekend of the UK turf season).

  • Argentine-based sire Lode’s son Que Expresion won the Star Prince Challenge in Singapore last weekend, while he has another 3 Group winners in Argentina (including As De Pink & Paulistinha).

  • And Lode’s Chilean-based 3/4 brother Golden Voyager in Chile has US Gr3 winner Mister Acpen to go with his Chilean Gr1 winner Santiago Matias.

42.. Full Sister To Lonhro Born At Woodlands

 14/11/2003

Shadea, dam of 8-time Gr1 winner Lonhro & this season’s Gr1 winning 3YO Niello, foaled their full sister (by Octagonal) at Woodlands Stud in the NSW Hunter Valley early yesterday morning. Woodlands bloodstock manager Trevor Lobb told aapracingandsports.com.au the filly has more of Niello’s characteristics than Lonhro, her 2YO brother Spikes or unraced sister Perfect Eight & noted: She’s not as leggy as Perfect Eight, but a little more solid with a strong head rather than pretty."

 41.. Sunline Tested In Foal

 14/11/2003

Champion mare Sunline has tested positive to Rock Of Gibraltar at Coolmore Stud according to Racing Radio.

The highest stakes earner in Australasian history failed to conceive at her initial attempt in September.

Meanwhile Sunline’s half sister Song Of Songs made a low key introduction to racing when beating two runner home in a 14 runner maiden at Seymour on October 19. The daughter of Danehill was passed in at the 2002 Magic Millions Yearling sale when bidding halted $200,000 short of her $1million reserve.

Sunline’s dam Songline (Western Symphony) is due to produce a foal by Sadler’s Wells champion son Galileo at Dr Jack and Sue Woolridge’s Inverness Stud, near Bowral NSW.

40.. Racing’s $4.2 Billion Boost To NSW Economy

 14/11/2003

Meanwhile an independent survey has revealed the NSW economy receives an annual boost of more than $4.2 billion from the racing industry & TAB wagering, reported aapracingandsports.com.au. Overall 55% of the economic benefit ($2.3 billion) is generated in the Sydney metropolitan area & the remaining 45% ($1.9 billion) across the State’s 11 regional districts. The economic impact flows back into the community through industries such as retail, food & beverages, recreation, technological services, tourism, transport & government. TAB wagering services provide $614 million of the economic boost & racing industry operations $3.6 billion. TAB spokesman Peter Kadar said the survey (conducted by EIR Pty Ltd) clearly underscores the interdependence between racing & TAB wagering operations, & how that working relationship positively impacts on regional areas. The survey found the combined activities of the racing industry & TAB wagering:

  • Generated 40,000 full-time jobs (18,000 in regional NSW).

  • Returned $720 million in taxation revenue to the NSW & Federal Governments.

  • Involved 44,000 participants behind the scenes (72% in non-metropolitan areas) in roles including trainers, jockeys, drivers, stable-hands, track-riders, farriers, race club staff & committee, medical & veterinary, bookmakers & assistants, administration staff, on-course tote staff, off-course tote staff, float operators & contractor staff.

39.. Shogun Lodge’s Alice Springs breeder

 14/11/2003

Although he was raised in a Woodlands Stud paddock, the sterling versatile galloper Shogun Lodge who shocked the nation when he collapsed and died while contesting the $502,000 Group1 Emirates Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, was bred by former Alice Spring’s newsagents, Mr and Mrs Ian Millard, and was sold on their behalf by Newhaven Park Stud for $200,000 at the William Inglis Sydney Easter sale.

A son of the Woodlands Stud dual hemisphere sire Grand Lodge and the unraced Best Western mare Pride of Tahnee, the seven-year-old Shogun Lodge was having his 58th start when he ran in the Emirates Stakes. To that date he had picked up some forty prize cheques for his connections including13 wins,12 seconds and eight thirds.
His best wins included three Group1 successes at Randwick, the AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Epsom Handicap and George Main Stakes, and the Group 2 events, the Pago Pago Stakes, Tulloch Stakes, Canterbury Stakes and the Gold Coast Hollindale Cup -twice.

However, the earnings of $4,640,314 of this Bob Thomsen, Randwick, trained galloper may have been nearly doubled if he had not galloped awkwardly early in many of his races for his driving finishes saw him second on nine occasions in Group1 races including the AJC and VRC Derbys, the AJC Doncaster Handicap, STC George Ryder Stakes and Doomben Cup.

Shogun Lodge was beaten less than a length also when third as favourite in the1999 Golden Slipper won by Catbird and at his next start was similarly placed in the AJC Champagne Stakes.

Highly fancied to win Saturday’s race, he had gone into it with two good lead ups, a win in the Lightning Handicap at Randwick on October 18 and then a half head and a nose third after being 14th on the turn in the Group 3 Yallambee Stakes at Flemington on November 1.

37.. Royal Trainer Calls For ‘Freezing & Future Testing’

 12/11/2003

In the UK, a formal Royal trainer is the latest British advocate to propose the Jockey Club freeze post-race samples from group stakes events to protect against new designer drugs that cannot be tested, reported bloodhorse.com. With the recent discovery of the designer steroid tetrahydrogestrinone in human athletics, some racing jurisdictions are taking steps to counter its possible use in racehorses. Racing NSW has begun testing for THG, & now trainer Lord Huntingdon of England has told London’s Daily Telegraph the designer drugs are a potentially huge problem for the industry: "It (freezing & future testing) needs to be done because the miscreants are always ahead of the police. If there are not miscreants in racing here, it will be the only sport in the world without them." Huntingdon added: "The Jockey Club could remove the black type from a horse & it would act as a deterrent." Asked if he wasn’t concerned that removing black-type would wreak havoc in the bloodstock market, he replied: "Doesn't it cause chaos in the art world when someone finds a painting which has been sold 3 or 4 times is a fake?"

36.. 2004 Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Sale Launch

 13/11/2003

2004 Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Yearling Sale catalogue will be launched at a cocktail party at Circular Quay on November 14, and glamour youngsters by first season sires such as Fusaichi Pegasus and Testa Rossa are set to take the limelight at the January sale on the Gold Coast.

Magic Millions managing director David Chester is quietly confident the 2004 will continue the dramatic growth of the Gold Coast-based sale company, which has recorded a 58 per cent increase in average since prominent trio Gerry Harvey, John Singleton and Rob Ferguson took the reins in 1997. Last year, Magic Millions posted an 8 per cent average increase, to $91,951, and a remarkable 14.6 per cent gross increase for 552 sold. The sale also boasted the highest clearance rate by far of any of the 11 Australasian majors  84.4 per cent against an across-the-board average clearance of 76 per cent.

The catalogue features 38 Danehill yearlings including a brother to Catbird and Danbird, and a colt from Lake Alexandrina, whose sister fetched $725,000 at the sale last year when knocked down to international purchaser Adrian Nichol. Yearlings by Group One winners such as Jezabeel, Chlorophyll, Isca, In Joyment and Canny Lass are also likely to figure prominently at a sale where the top price in 2003 was $900,000 for a Sunday Silence colt.

Overall the catalogue is simply so superior to anything we’ve had before now, and I think our sale is accepted as one of the major sales on the global yearling sale circuit, said Chester. We had five individual Oaks winners last season and the first three across the line in the Crown Oaks last week were Magic Millions horses, he added.

In 2003, Magic Millions averaged $91,951 for 552 sold for gross receipts of $50.7 million.

The second annual Aushorse Thoroughbred Media Awards, sponsored by Magic Millions, will be held to coincide with the catalogue launch at a cocktail party at Circular Quay on Friday evening.

We have been absolutely inundated with more than 200 entries for the awards, said Aushorse spokeswoman Bronwyn Farr. This year we introduced a new award for best thoroughbred photograph and entries for that have been incredibly strong.

Prizes for award winners include cash and trophies as well as five nights at Jupiters Casino including return airfares for the Aushorse Thoroughbred Journalist of the Year, and a Deluxe overnight package at Sydney’s Observatory Hotel for the Young Thoroughbred Journalist of the Year.

We’re delighted to have Magic Millions as sponsor of our awards and it’s going to be an action packed night with the catalogue release and award presentation, as well as great entertainment with 2KY racing personality Greg Radley in charge of proceedings, she said.

32.. Genetic Profiling Could Alter Bloodstock Landscape

  11/11/2003

The new frontier in bloodstock analysis could be on the horizon through a new company formed by 2 scientists from the California Institute of Technology, predicted bloodhorse.com. The concept is genetic profiling, which the founders of Equigene Research say could dramatically alter the decision-making process in buying & breeding racehorses. The company (which last year won the prestigious CalTech Business Plan Competition) has created proprietary technology it claims can identify key genes that control performance & health in racehorses. Equigene co-founder Dr Carlo Quinonez explained: "The idea is certain traits run in certain families. If a horse is a bleeder or has soft bones, there is a genetic basis for this. Our idea is: cut to the chase by finding the gene that causes this & finding out if a horse has it. Even though a horse may come from a family of bleeders, it may not inherently have that gene." Quinonez & his partners planned for the business to cater to human athletes, but decided to start with racehorses because there was little previous research on genetics & human athletic performance. Quinonez summed up: "It's surprising how many complex personality traits have strong genetic components. Scientists have already discovered genes that influence how shy or risk-seeking a person will be. Most likely, there are also genes that influence a horse's personality - certainly traits such as docileness or libido are heritable in horses."

31.. Inglis Graduates Win 8 In HK

30.. Aust Tax Office Announces Racing Crackdown

  10/11/2003

The Australian Taxation Office has shocked the horse-racing industry by foreshadowing a program to audit business activity statements & income tax returns, reported The Australian Financial Review. The ATO believes many in the industry are neither declaring prize-money nor complying with GST requirements. The crackdown is expected to target 5,200 owners, 1,340 trainers, 410 jockeys & 50 farriers in NSW as a 1st step, with a likely expansion nation-wide if warranted. ATO assistant commissioner Allan Histon confirmed: We do have a cash-economy program & the horse-racing industry deals in cash a lot  or lots of elements do anyway. We were already working with exports & we realised that a lot of entities weren’t disclosing prize-money, so we’ve done a mail-out alerting the industry that we will be conducting audits. Traditionally in this sort of business we always find a lot of non-compliance, deliberately or through oversight they always say it’s oversight.

29.. Shogun Lodge Dies In Gr1 Tragedy

  10/11/2003

One of Australia’s most popular gallopers, multiple Gr1-winning 7YO gelding Shogun Lodge (Grand Lodge-Pride Of Tahnee, by Best Western) collapsed & died mid-race in the Gr1 Emirates Stakes at Flemington in Melbourne. Racing Victoria’s chief veterinarian Dr John McCaffrey told racenet.com.au a post-mortem examination will be carried out, but noted: "In our experience the 2 major reasons for this are either internal haemorrhage or cardiac failure, & I'd suspect in this case it may well be cardiac failure." Shogun Lodge notched 13 wins (all group or listed) & 20 placings (13 in Gr1 races) in 57 previous starts for $4,640,314 prize-money; highlights include wins in the: 1999 Gr1 AJC George Main Stakes (1600m); 2000 Gr1 AJC Epsom Handicap (1600m); 2001 Gr1 AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m); 1999 Gr2 STC Pago Pago Stakes (1200m); 2000 Gr2 GCTC Hollindale Cup (1800m); 2000 Gr2 STC Tulloch Wine Stakes (2000m); 2001 Gr2 Hollindale Cup (1800m); 2001 Gr2 STC Canterbury Stakes (1200m); 2001 Gr2 STC Theo Marks Stakes (1300m); 1999 Gr3 NJC Spring Stakes (1600m); 1999 Gr3 STC Lone Star Food For Champions Stakes (1200m); 1998 Listed AJC Canonbury Stakes (1000m); & 2003 Listed Tatt's City Lightning Handicap (1000m).

28.. Titanic Jack Wins Gr1 Emirates Stakes

  10/11/2003

Titanic Jack (ridden by Brett Prebble for trainer Tom Hughes junior) defeated fellow 4YO gelding True Glo (Brief Truce-Torelgo, by Zeditave) & 7YO gelding Crawl (Dr Grace-Traipse, by Bletchingly). Titanic Jack (a $75,000 purchase by Harry Lawton at the Inglis Victorian Autumn Yearling Sale) now has 7 wins & 4 placings in 20 starts for $999,700 prize-money. Encosta De Lago’s previous Gr1 winner was Delago Brom in the VRC Cadbury Guineas.

  10/11/2003

The 6YO gelding Zazzman (Distinctly North-Glen Iris, by Marscay) made it 4-wins-in-succession in 4 weeks with victory in the $200,000 Gr2 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2500m) at Flemington.  22.. Special Harmony cruises to Oaks victory

  6/11/2003

Special Harmony provided some joy in a tumultuous week for the Lee Freedman stable when streaked away to a 2 3/4-length victory in the $625,000 Group 1 Crown Oaks at Flemington this afternoon.

The daughter of Spinning World stamped herself as the best staying filly in the nation by defeating the South Australian trained filly Dane Belltar (Danewin  Ameerat - Blaadi by Kenmare) with Timbourina (Timber Country - Valourina by Snippets) running her usual honest race to finish three-quarters of a length back in third.

Damien Oliver gave Special Harmony the run of the race from her inside barrier allowing the chestnut filly to settle back on the fence in fifth place behind a moderate early pace set by Danish Peak Royal Mask Rinky Dink and Grandly.
Danny Nikolic on Dane Belltar moved up to put Damien Oliver in a pocket on Special Harmony but the carnivals most successful jockey muscled the favourite into the clear and quickly put the race beyond doubt.

It was the third Victorian Oaks win for Lee Freedman and Damien Oliver who teamed up to win the race in 1994 with Northwood Plume and in 1997 with Kensington Palace

Special Harmony takes her record to 5 wins 3 seconds and 1 third from 11 starts for earnings of $1,072,600. She won two of her three starts last season at two including the Listed Silver Jubilee Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 22. After finishing second at Flemington on September 6 and third at Moonee Valley over 1540m a week later, Special Harmony was runner-up to subsequent Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes winner Casual Pass in the Bill Stutt Stakes (G2) at Moonee Valley before breaking through for her first victory at three in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1620m) at Flemington on October 4. She then became Spinning World’s first Group 1 winner with a 2 ¼-length score in the $500,000 Group 1 Vinery Stud - Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 15. The powerfully built chestnut could not concede 4kgs to Timbourina in the Group 2 Qantas Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at her last start but resoundingly defeated that filly at level weights in the Oaks.

The result of the Oaks was a triumph for graduates of the Magic Millions Yearling Sales with Special Harmony a $95,000 purchase by Robert Roulston Bloodstock at the 2002 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, runner-up Dane Belltar a bargain $10,000 buy at 2002 Magic Millions Adelaide Summer Yearling Sale by trainer Leon Macdonald and third placed Timbourina a $310,000 buy by Tony Wildman at the 2002 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

A half-sister to WATC Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Gambei (Dehere) and the stakes-placed King Canute (King Of Kings), Special Harmony is the fourth foal and third winner of the Marooned mare Marooned Lady, winner of the 1992 W.A Sires Produce Stakes (G3).

Bred in W.A. by Brian Bradley & Partners, Special Harmony descends from the stakes winning Grey Sovereign mare Matatina, the fifth dam of Marooned Lady, a half sister to the champion stallion Showdown a stalwart of the Victorian industry during the 1970’s from service at Stockwell Stud run by the late Ken Cox. Matatina is also a half sister to the unraced Hornbeam mare Cammina the third dam of Epsom Oaks winner Lady Carla (Caerleon).

With her second Group 1 victory Special Harmony has continued the magnificent run experienced by Coolmore stallions over the carnival.
