Danehill,
who died Tuesday at Coolmore Stud, was awarded 2003 Champion Sire honors at the
Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association dinner at Scone.
Danehill stood from 1990 to 2001 in Australia. Danehill has 116 Australian-bred
weanlings as his final southern hemisphere crop, and some 40 mares covered in
Ireland to southern time.
He has had 610 starters for 448 winners and 108 stakes winners here to date for
earnings of more than $90 million.
Talented filly Halibery, who won two Blue Diamond Preludes before placing in the
Blue Diamond Stakes, and Black Opal Stakes winner Handsome Ransom, helped ensure
Vinery stallion Red Ransom earned champion first crop sire honors.
Red Ransom also enjoyed an excellent Inglis Australian Easter Sale with 23
selling for an average $151,739 and top price of $400,000.
Shantha's Choice, the dam of four time Group One winner Redoute's Choice and AJC
Spring Champion Stakes winner Platinum Scissors, was named 2003 Broodmare of the
Year.
Shantha's Choice (Canny Lad - Dancing Show) has a Danehill filly named Monsoon
Wedding and a weanling colt by Fusaichi Pegasus; she was covered by Giant's
Causeway in 2002.
Golden Slipper winner Polar Success (Success Express – Patou) was named 2003
Champion Two-Year-Old.
Bred by Gerry Harvey at Baramul Stud, Polar Success franked a bold effort when
runner-up to Hasna in the Group Two Silver Slipper when she turned the tables on
Hasna in the Reisling Stakes before winning the Golden Slipper by a length from
How Funny, with Hasna a short neck away third.
Polar Success was purchased by Graeme Rogerson for just $32,000 at the Magic
Millions Winter Sale and she has earnings of $2,133,705 with four wins and two
placings from seven attempts.
Helenus (Helissio – Worldwide Elsie), bred by Widden Stud and sold to Leon
Corstens for $80,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, won Champion
Three-Year-Old honors.
Helenus franked his Victoria Derby win in November with a game victory in the
Group One Rosehill Guineas, beating subsequent South Australian Derby winner
Mummify.
Helenus’ Melbourne spring haul encompassed the Group Two Bill Stutt Stakes
(1600m), the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m), the Group Two AAMI Vase
(2040m) and the Victoria Derby (2500m), an unprecedented feat, and he has
earnings of $2,114,680 with five wins and three placings from 13 attempts.
