Sheikh
Mohammed’s Darley Stud has made an offer believed to be worth around $5
million for the Willowbend Stud stallion Clang reported http://www.breedingracing.com.
A son of the Mr. Prospector stallion Bellotto Clang has hit the heights through
two foals from his second crop, STC Golden Slipper Stakes (G1) winner Calaway
Gal and AJC Australian Derby (G1) winner Clangalang.
"The shareholders have met and are currently discussing the offer,"
said Clang's current major shareholder & studmaster David Lucas of
Willowbend Stud in Queensland. "And having spoken to just about all of them
already, I can tell you it's 50-50."
Clang covered a massive 199 mares in 2002 at a fee of $8,800 (inc GST). His
service fee was to be set at $13,500 this year however it would be considerably
more should the sale take place.
If Willowbend loses Clang to Darley then a possible replacement may arrive in
the form of another Mr. Prospector line stallion Lion Cavern a full brother to
the Kentucky based Gone West the sire of first season stud sensation Elusive
Quality, which makes his Australian debut at Darley Stud this season. Owned by
Darley stud Lion Cavern has served the last three seasons at Lynden Park Stud,
Victoria. While his oldest Australian progeny are yearlings Lion Cavern is a
proven Group 1 producer in Europe where his undoubted star has been the Clive
Brittain-trained filly Crimplene who earned the title of champion three-year old
filly in Ireland, England and Germany following her wins in the Irish Guineas
(G1), Coronation Stakes (G1), Nassau Stakes (G1) and German 1,000 Guineas (G2).
Lion Cavern now stands the northern hemisphere season at Wimbledon farm,
Kentucky where his 2003 fee was $US$12,500.
"I know him well & would love to stand him in Queensland," said
Lucas. "He already has sired 2 European Gr1 winners & he'd be a great
fit up here."
