Arrowfield
Stud announced today that they are expanding their stallion roster into
Queensland for the 2003 breeding season.
Arrowfield will stand the first season sires SUNDAY KNIGHT, a son of record
breaking sire Sunday Silence and COUNT ALBRECHT, a half brother to multiple
Champion sire Zabeel, in a joint venture with Plaintree Farms on the Darling
Downs.
“We have decided to stand Sunday Knight and Count Albrecht in Queensland
because of their suitability for that market,” said Arrowfield Managing
Director John Messara. “Like Sunday Silence’s AJC Oaks winner Sunday Joy,
whose dam Joie Denise won the Queensland Oaks, Sunday Knight hails from a strong
colonial bred family and will be the first son of Sunday Silence to stand in
Queensland. Count Albrecht will also appeal to Queensland breeders not only
because he is a half brother to Zabeel but also because his sire Geiger Counter
has already enjoyed great success in the State through his sire son Canadian
Silver.”
Heather Brown, Managing Director of Plaintree Farms, described the venture as a
tremendous opportunity for the entire Queensland breeding industry. “It’s an
honour to work with Arrowfield,” she said. “They are fantastic innovators
and leaders in the International thoroughbred industry, and their ability to
select the right stallions for Australian breeding and racing conditions is
underlined by the fact that their current stallion roster includes leading
Australian sires like Dehere and Flying Spur. Importantly for Queensland
breeders is the fact that Arrowfield has An excellent strike rate in producing
stallions who have worked here in Queensland: they have already bred and sold
successful sires like Lion Hunter, St Jude, and the exciting young stallion Easy
Rocking.”
“Best of all, both Sunday Knight and Count Albrecht have all the qualities we
were looking for,” Brown said. “They have world class commercial bloodlines,
they are magnificent looking individuals and they both possessed enormous
ability.”
“SUNDAY KNIGHT is a sensational addition to the Queensland stallion ranks in
light of the enormous impact his now deceased sire Sunday Silence is having in
Australia,” said Brown. “Sunday Knight is not only the first son of Sunday
Silence to stand in Queensland, he is also the first colonial-bred son of Sunday
Silence to stand in Australia. Furthermore, he is from an outstanding Australian
family: his dam Wrap Around (by Bletchingly) is a Group 1 winning half-sister to
Group 1 winner Rose of Danehill. A vital aspect of Sunday Knight is that he is
completely free of Danehill, Danzig and Northern Dancer – something Queensland
breeders have been searching for.”
While unraced, Sunday Knight showed his trainer John Hawkes that he was a horse
of considerable talent. “From what I saw at home and from his trials, we
regarded him [Sunday Knight] as having Group winning ability,” said John
Hawkes”
COUNT ALBRECHT is a grandson of Mr Prospector whose sireline has now emerged as
a dominant force in Australian racing with his sons and grandsons producing the
likes of Calaway Gal, Victory Vein, Ethereal, Dash for Cash, Clangalang,
Winestock, Dress Code, Secret Land etc in the past two racing seasons alone.
Count Albrecht is a regally bred stallion being out of the Nureyev mare Lady
Giselle making him a half brother to multiple champion sire Zabeel. Lady Giselle
is also closely related to Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Detroit who in
turn produced the Arc winner and highly successful sire Carnegie. Count Albrecht
showed he was a scintillating sprinter on the track himself. “He is a
beautiful stallion, a big, powerful masculine sire that will really appeal to
Queensland breeders,” said Brown.
“Count Albrecht showed me a lot of speed on the track,” said his trainer
John O’Shea. “He had the one asset all stallions need for success –
speed.”
