 43. New Black-Type for Flying Spur Colts

15/05/2003

Arena Valadora became Flying Spur’s 11th stakeswinning colt and his 23rd stakeswinner overall with a classy first up win in the Listed VRC Straight Six (1200m) at Flemington on Sunday.

This was Arena Valadora’s sixth career win and his first start since running second to St Andrews in the Launceston Cup (2400m) on February 26.

Arena Valadora was having only his 12th start and the David Hall trained four year old has now won six races and been placed on five other occasions. A trip to Queensland is now on the cards for Arena Valadora's where he could contest the G3 Tattersalls' Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 21, or the G3 Ipswich Cup (2150m) a week later or the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast on July 5.

Arena Valadora ran the 1200 metres in a slick 1:9.42s and he was officially timed to run his last 600 in a sizzling 33.57s. He won going away by 1-1/2 lengths from Sir Chuckle with Lock The Key a long head away third.

In addition to Arena Valadora’s stakes win, Flying Spur 2YOs Tornado Alley and Our Spur became new black type performers for their sire on the weekend. The Maryann Thexton trained gelding Tornado Alley ran a bold front running race to narrowly miss winning the Listed Ken Russell Memorial while the David Racavolis trained Our Spur also finished a solid second in the Listed VRC Gibson Carmichael Stakes. Flying Spur is now the sire of two stakeswinners and four stakesplaced two-year-olds this season and his juveniles have earned over $1 million in prizemoney.

Flying Spur enjoyed further success on the weekend when his highly talented Gerald Ryan trained 5yo gelding Gold Class (ex Shavanno Miss) won impressively over 1400m at the Gold Coast. Always considered a Group horse by his trainer, graduating to Stakes company is now on the agenda for Gold Class.

The great run from Flying Spur’s colts this month began on May 3rd when his 3yo son Wool Zone won the Listed WATC St Ledger (2400m) in a canter by 4.5 lengths.
Flying Spur will stand this coming season at $44,000 (inc GST).
