 24. Blevic's Morphetville Treble

06/05/2003

Kambula Stud’s Blevic underscored once again just what an underrated stallion he is with a treble at Morphetville on Saturday.

The Victorian Derby winning son of Scenic produced two stakes winners, 2yo gelding Under The Bridge (ex Wine Cask by At Talaq) successful in the $60,000 Listed Alcohol Go Easy Stakes (1522m) and 5yo gelding Exalted Lad (Alleged Lady by Delgado) narrow winner of the $40,000 Listed Widden Stud-Adelaide City Stakes.

The Tony Vasil-trained Under The Bridge was winning for the second time in five starts. He had broken his maiden at Mornington just a fortnight earlier. Under the Bridge may have earned his chance in the S.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes with his decisive 1 ¼-length win over Outback Lad (Jeune) and Barabba Road (Snaadee).

Passed in when he failed to make his $25,000 reserve at the Adelaide Magic Millions Sale Under The Bridge is the third named foal of the At Talaq mare Wine Cask, which ran unplaced in her two racetrack appearances. Wine Cask died in December last year.

Nobody could argue that Exalted Lad did not deserve to win a stakes race. A first crop son of Blevic Exalted Lad had been stakes placed on no fewer than seven occasions before breaking through for his first stakes victory in the Listed Widden Stud-Adelaide City Stakes. The 5yo gelding had been runner-up in the Listed SAJC C S Hayes Memorial Cup twice and the Group 3 SAJC Tokyo City Cup a race in which he has also placed third.

Exalted Lad has proved a great money-spinner for his connections. His earnings of over $220,000 comes from 7 wins 4 seconds and 8 thirds from 38 starts.

The fifth named foal of the 1990 Group 3 SAJC Auraria Stakes winner Alleged Lady (Delgado) Exalted Lad is a half brother to Exalted Miss (Keepers), which won the Auraria Stakes (G3) seven years after her dam.

Like Under The Bridge Exalted Lad left the Adelaide Sale’s ring unsold. He was passed in for $37,500 at the 1999 ABCOS Bonus Yearling Sale.

The continued success of Blevic will be welcomed by Inverness Stud, which launches the stud career of Blevic’s AJC Derby winning three-quarter brother Universal Prince this spring.
