 23. Records tumble at National Broodmare Sale

06/05/2003

The 2003 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale has concluded after a record breaking day of selling.

Last year’s record National Broodmare price of $425,000 was easily beaten today when the former outstanding four time Group Two winner Ateates was knocked down to Ken Turner of Almavale Bloodstock for a cool $500,000.

The highlight mares of the catalogue today were well sought out by leading buyers with prices of up to $500,000 being offered for the star matrons. A few quality mares narrowly missed their reserves.

“It’s been a strong day of selling,” Magic Millions’ Managing Director David Chester said tonight. “There were some quality mares offered and sold at the sale and the strong results clearly show the National Broodmare Sale is a great place to sell and buy the best mares.”

One of the most pleasing results from today’s session was the massive leap in the average price of the session. A total of 162 mares were sold today for an average price of $54,866. Total receipts for the day were $8,888,250, up more than four million dollars from last year’s sale.

Ateates was an early star of today’s sale. She was knocked down for $500,000 to local buyer Ken Turner of Almavale Bloodstock. A full sister to the former outstanding Group One winner Ruffles, Ateates is a four time Group Two winning daughter of the brilliant sire Zeditave.

A little later the beautifully bred Brocco mare Coat was knocked down to New Zealand based Springfield Stud for a cool $350,000.

The current day sprinting star Fair Embrace, a daughter of the brilliant sire Strategic, failed to be sold during her time in the ring, but was sold moments later to Baramul Stud for $400,000.

Fair Embrace’s stablemate Gold Lottey, a daughter of the champion Victorian sire Encosta de Lago, was sold to Queensland based agent Neil Jenkinson for $390,000.

The two mares in foal to the champion now non-shuttler Danehill offered by Collingrove Stud were both sold to Strawberry Hill Stud and they are sure to be well sought out yearlings when re-offered at the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sales. From the well bred imported mares Silken Whisper and Sorb Apple the mares sold for $220,000 and $280,000 respectively.

One of the expected sale toppers La Bella Dama failed to reach her reserve price of $650,000. A final offering of $600,000 was rejected by her owners. The Group One winning daughter of Desert Sun was presented in foal to the champion Giant’s Causeway.

Another mare to be passed in at a high price was the proven Group One producer Procrastinate. Offered by Edinglassie Stud (as agent) the daughter of Jade Hunter was passed in for $500,000, $50,000 short of her reserve.

The unreserved dispersal of mares from Turannga Farm was well received by buyers with all of their 40 mares being sold for a gross figure of $556,300.

The Magic Millions National Broodmare sale concludes tomorrow with a full day of mares catalogued. Chester said the sale would be bound to throw up some great opportunities for buyers.

“Tomorrow we are offering some very good mares who are sure to be sold for competitive prices,” Chester reported. “This is the sale in 1999 that for just $2,250 we sold Little Recruit in foal to Clang. The resultant foal is of course Clangalang (AJC Derby, Frank Packer Plate etc).
