He
has sired just two stakes winners all season yet the deceased Nijinsky stallion
Serheed (USA) remains on track to become the first ever West Australian based
sire to carry off the Australian Sires Premiership.
When Fred Kersley’s champion Northerly waltzed away with the $1,250,000 Group
1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington today he added a further $817,500 to the
$1 million lead Serheed currently experiences over the second placed Danehill.
Even allowing for the fact that Danehill has unearthed several leading Golden
Slipper candidates in the last fortnight Northerly seems to have such a
stranglehold on the feature WFA staying races it would take an exceptional set
of circumstances to see Serheed toppled for the title.
Northerly is experiencing an unbelievable season. His earnings have rocketed to
over $8.8 million with 19 wins and 7 placings in 31 starts. The 6yo gelding has
Sunline’s record earnings of $11,693,887 within his sights. This season to
date Northerly has won the Craiglee Stakes Gr.2 ($227,500), Underwood S., Gr 1
($227,500), Turnbull S., Gr 2 ($227,500), Caulfield Cup, Gr 1 ($1,350,000), W.S.
Cox Plate Gr 1 ($2,000,000), St George Stakes, Gr 2 ($130,000) and the
Australian Cup Gr 1.
Kersley has earmarked the $400,000 Ranvet Stakes (G1)on March 29 and $2 million
The BMW (G1) on April 12 for his champion who may also contest the $3 million
Singapore International Cup (2000m) on May 17
