 12. US Import Telesto A Boost For Tasmania

12/6/2003

Tasmania's Armidale Stud has hit the jackpot with its new US import Telesto.

Denis and Robyn Whishaw, who conduct the Carrick nursery, are thrilled with recent results from the US where two close relations of the classically-bred Telesto have won two Group One events.

Their Telesto is by champion sire Mr. Prospector from the grand Northfields mare Aviance and is not be to confused with the Australian G1 winner by Star Way who stands at stud in Queensland.

The recent US G1 winners related to the Whishaw’s Telesto are Aldebran and Denon.

Hard on the heels of Telesto’s three-quarter brother Aldebaran’s win in the G1 Metropolitan Mile in New York comes the news that his half brother Denon, by Pleasant Colony, was triumphant in the $US400,000 Manhattan Handicap at Belmont Park on June 7.

The Manhattan Handicap is the most prestigious 10 furlong turf event in New York.

The five-year-old Denon had also won the G1 Turf Classic (12f) at Belmont last September and now has three G1 races among his six victories.

The Manhattan Handicap was only his second start for the year after a first-up second at Hollywood Park on May 10.

Bred in Virginia, Denon is one of eight winners from nine starters (including Telesto) out of the G1-winning Northfields mare Aviance, a daughter of Sir Ivor from Minnie Hauk.

Aviance has also produced European highweight and dual G1 winner Chimes Of Freedom, dam of Nureyev’s Canadian G1 winner Good Journey who will stand at Ealing Park Stud in Victoria this spring.

Aviance’s other top class progeny include the multiple G1 winner Aldebaran, who like Telesto is also by Mr. Prospector and the stakeswinner Imperfect Circle (Riverman), dam of European Champion Miler and top shuttle sire Spinning World (Nureyev).

Aviance’s grandam Best In Show is also the third dam of Umatilla and Hurricane Sky. It is the family of El Gran Senor and Try My Best.

Rarely has a sire with such a deep international pedigree as Telesto, a winner in the UK, stood at stud at Tasmania where he is certain to upgrade local racing in years to come.
