Success for shuttle stallions in Japan

With so many Japanese based stallions now standing in Australia and New Zealand
there has been plenty of interest in Japan in recent weeks for Australian
breeders but it was Japanese champion Agnes Digital that stole the show last
Sunday.
Takao Watanabe’s world traveler Agnes Digital (6yo h Crafty Prospector-Chancey
Squaw, by Chief's Crown) recorded his first victory this year with a fast
finishing win over Admire Max (4yo c Sunday Silence-Dyna Shoot by Northern
Taste) and the favourite Lohengrin (4yo c Singspiel-Carling by Garde Royale) in
the Grade 1 Yasuda Kinen at Tokyo racecourse on June 8. Hero of the Hong Kong
Cup (HK-G1) over Darley Stud’s Tobougg (Barathea) which begins stud duty in
Australia this season, the Tenno Sho (Jpn-G1) over Japanese Horse Of The Year
T.M. Opera O, and the Mile Championship (Jpn-G1) on by Turf and Dirt, Agnes
Digital was winning for the twelfth time in 27 starts while his earnings
skyrocket to almost A$12 million.
The highest earning son of the veteran stallion Crafty Prospector (Mr
Prospector-Real Crafty Lady by In Reality), who stands for a fee of US$25,000 at
Brookdale Farm Kentucky, Agnes Digital is the first foal of the Chief’s Crown
mare Chancey Squaw a half sister to three stakes winner out of a half sister to
champion racehorse and sire Blushing Groom.
Creating a huge impression with a 7-lengths win in the $360,000 Ontake Tokubetsu
at Chukyo on May 31 was the U.S bred 5yo h Lord Prevail (USA) a son of Woodman
out of Dance Play (The Minstrel) a three-quarter sister to 1984 Epsom Derby (G1)
winner Secreto (Northern Dancer). Dance Play is a member of the exclusive
band of broodmares that resides at Jim Fleming’s Tyreel Stud. At the
2003 Magic Millions sale Dance Play’s colt by Danehill was sold to Hong
Kong trainer Manfred Man for $200,000.
Finishing second to Lord Prevail was Earnest Wish a 4yo colt by Chatswood
Stud’s handsome Sunday Silence stallion Genuine.
Another son of Genuine, 3yo colt V Rocky, also had to settle for second
in the A$984,000 The Uunicorn Stakes (G3) at Tokyo on June 7.
Breaking his maiden at Chukyo over 1800m on May 25 was the Brian’s Time colt
Fumino whose dam Fumino Amooru is by Sir Tristram out of the regally bred
Secretariat mare Whenever Wherever a daughter of English 1000 Guineas winner
Miralla.

Kiseki a 5yo mare by Arrowfield Stud’s Fuji Kiseki out of Be Bop a Lu
(Mr Prospector-Newchance Lady) sped over the 1200m at Chukyo racecourse in an
amazing 1:06.9 to win the A$592,000 TV Aichi Open on May 24. Be Bop a Lu is a
winning sister to Bayshore Stakes (G3) winner Strike Gold.
At Tokyo racecourse on Japanese Derby day the $467,000 Komakusa Sho was won by
3yo colt World Scale a son of Coolmore Stud’s Spinning World out
of Savannah Song a Riverman half sister to Alydar’s Best (Alydar) winner of
the Grand Criterium (G1) Pretty Polly S. (G2) Silken Glider S (G3) and runner-up
in Irish Oaks (G1) and Yellow Ribbon S. (G1).
Derby Day had a distinct Australian flavour when Damien Oliver scored his
first stakes win in Japan, the A$361,000 Akigawa Tokubetsu, on the 5yo h
Yoshifusa King a son of Darley Stud’s Carnegie out of Yoshi
Ellen a daughter of long time Lyndhurst Stud resident Hail to Success
(Swaps).
Fureika Sunday a 3yo filly by Sunday Silence out of the Bellotto mare Seto
Flowerian, won an 1800m allowance at Chukyo on June 1. Seto Flowerian won 5
races in Australia including the AJC Adrian Knox S (G3) and was runner-up in the
AJC Oaks (G1). She has already produced Fureika Sunday’s top class brother
Tiger Café whose 2 wins in Japan include the Hopeful Stakes, was runner-up in
the Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) (JPN-G1) and third in the Yayoi Sho
(JPN-G2). Seto Flowerian has a colt from the last crop of Sunday Silence at the
Japan Racing Horse Association Select Foal to be held at Northern Horse Park,
Hokkaido Japan on July 7-8.
The A$445,000 Chukyo Racecourse 50th Anniversary (1200m) was won by the 6yo Royal
Academy mare Il Bacio.
Glemorgan Farm’s Generous has had a very successful week with 5yo h
Takeden Julius Generous winning the A$444,000 Bakushu Stakes at Tokyo on June 7
the on the following day Dantsu Running took out the A442,000 June Stakes.
Dantsu Running a 6yo h by Generous is out of the stakes placed Matriarch, a
sister to champion Canadian 2yo filly Wavering Girl (dam of Grade 1 winner
Military), out of the amazingly prolific broodmare Battle Creek Girl (His
Majesty) the dam of 18 foals including six stakes winners. Desert Running
finished a neck winner over the Irish bred Lord Forester a son of the ill-fated Charnwood
Forest.
Kambula Stud’s former shuttle stallion Tayasu Tsuyoshi twice
came close in two stakes races when 4yo colt D S Thunder finished third in the
$1.43 million The Tokai TV Hai Tokai Stakes (G2) on May 25 and 3yo filly Cosmo
Nirvana finished third in the $250,000 Gerbera Sho at Tokyo on May 31.
The Australian bred Setono Lodge broke his maiden by 3-lengths over 1200m at
Chukyo on June 8. A 3yo son of Woodlands Stud’s Grand Lodge, Setono
Lodge is the second foal of the Military Plume mare Sister Of The Sun a
half sister to Rubiton Stakes (G3) winner Stalk (Scenic). Round Eye, the grandam
of Sister Of The Sun is a full sister to Isolt the dam of Sir Tristram.
On the same program Rich Hill Stud’s Pentire, who has been enjoying an
enormous run in both hemispheres of late, kept the run going when Follow the
Wind (Pentire-Gentle Woman by Brian’s Time) with a 3-length win in the
A$361,000 Okehazama Tokubetsu (1200m).
Pentire rounded off the program with another success when his 5yo son Up
And Comer won a 1700m A$135,000 Allowance race by 2-lengths.
