William
Inglis & Son Ltd look back on another successful season of stakes winners
sold by the pre-eminent sales company.
AUSTRALIAN EASTER YEARLING SALE.
The Inglis flagship event produced more than 40 stakes-winners highlighted by
first class local horses such as GRAND ARMEE (2000 Easter $150,000), HELENUS
(2001 Easter $80,000), THORN PARK (2001 Easter $200,000), and MAGICAL
MISS (2000 Easter $520,000).
All four are back in work and pleasing connections as they work towards further
success at the upcoming spring carnivals.
Impeccably bred Danehill (USA) filly MILANOVA (2001 Easter $700,000)
stood out as the most expensive Easter stakes-winner. She took the SAJC Lindsay
Park Guineas L and finished second in the SAJC Australasian Oaks Gr 1,
performances that will enhance her value and ensure a lucrative stud career.
At the other end of the scale is talented filly RARE INSIGHT (2001 Easter
$50,000), the cheapest of our Easter stakes-winners. She was good enough to win
the AJC Stan Fox Stakes Gr 2 and nearly $200,000 before going amiss last spring.
CLASSIC YEARLING SALE.
Classic goes from strength to strength as a source of high-class winners. With
an average price of around $30,000 it is undoubtedly the best value yearling
sale in Australia.
Classic accounted for 23 local stakes-winners including headline grabbing colts CHOISIR
(2001 Classic $55,000) and BEL ESPRIT (2001 Classic $9,000) who will both
embark on stud careers this spring.
Other Group One winners to leap from the Classic sale ring were exciting staying
prospect HALF HENNESSY (2001 Classic $65,000), evergreen sprinter BOMBER
BILL (1997 Classic $31,000), also class fillies MACEDON LADY (2001
Classic $22,000) and ROYAL PURLER (2001 Classic $8,000).
The least expensive of the Classic stakes-winners is an honour shared between
stable-mates ROYAL PURLER and SPORTSMAN, who both joined the team
of Greg Hickman after being purchased for just $8,000 apiece.
While Royal Purler has departed racing to pursue a career as a mum, Sportsman
has returned from his winter break in great shape and looms as a likely big
improver this spring.
MELBOURNE PREMIER YEARLING SALE.
The Victorian showcase continues to produce topliners and last season accounted
for 11 local stakes-winners plus Singapore sensation NINETYFIVE EMPEROR
(2001 Premier $66,000).
Recently retired sprint king RUBITANO (1999 Premier $95,000) has been a
terrific ambassador for Premier, winning 11 races and close to $1.3 million
including spectacular victories in the VRC Salinger Stakes Gr 1 and Newmarket
Handicap Gr 1.
Star Victorian juvenile WINESTOCK (2002 Premier $21,000) took out the VRC
Sires’ Produce Stakes Gr 1 and $500,000 Inglis Premier Race, earning his
connections a whopping $618,050. A great result for a horse which is the
cheapest of our Premier stakes-winners this season.
Other Premier stars include million dollar earner FIELDS OF OMAGH (1999
Premier $50,000), tough stayer GREY SONG (2000 Premier $25,000) and
brilliantly fast filly BEFORE TOO LONG (2001 Premier $40,000).
Bargain Basement Produces Oaks Star
Mixed thoroughbred sales are regarded as the “bargain basement” when it
comes time to shop for a thoroughbred racehorse. But on occasions a diamond can
appear in the rough.
Such was the case with SOUND ACTION, winner of the SAJC Australasian Oaks
Gr 1 and prizemoney of $311,200.
The Roberta Maguire trained filly was purchased for just $2,500 at the 2001
December Thoroughbred Sale in Melbourne and is the cheapest stakes-winner sold
by William Inglis and Son Ltd for the 2002/2003 racing season.
A tall leggy chestnut by Vettori (IRE), she won seven of eight starts and seems
destined to play a hand in the major staying events this spring.
