A
Sunday Silence colt from the former top Australian race filly Seto Flowerian has
been sold for a session topping price of $4.11 million (¥330 million; US$2.8
million) during the first of two days of selling at the JHRA Select Foals Sale
in Japan this afternoon.
Consigned by prominent Japanese nursery Shadai Farm, the colt was the subject of
fierce bidding from all the leading buyers at the complex before being knocked
down to Fusaro Sekiguchi.
The colt, a full brother to the Group One performer Tiger Café, is from the
former top class race filly Seto Flowerian, the winner of five races during her
racetrack career.
A daughter of the South Australian based sire Bellotto, Seto Flowerian was bred
by Adelaide businessman Ken Eustace and sold through the 1992 Magic Millions
January Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.
A member of the Turannga Stud draft, Seto Flowerian was purchased by the
Australian Bloodhorse Club of Japan for a mere $35,000.
During her racetrack career the daughter of Bellotto won the Group Two Adrian
Knox Stakes and was placed second behind Alcove in the Group One Australian Oaks
at Randwick. She was also third in a listed Bendigo Cup and listed Belle of the
Turf Stakes at Gosford. She retired from the track with stakes earnings of
$217,870.
The family of Seto Flowerian is one of the most proven in Australia. Members
including the Melbourne and Adelaide Cup winner Subzero, the Caulfield Guineas
winner Centro as well the Slipper winning sire Marscay.
Seto Flowerian is also a three quarter sister to the present day Adelaide based
Group performer Lawson’s Storm.
Magic Millions is a popular buying ground for stud masters, breeders and owners
in general on the search for top class fillies which are likely to prove winners
on the track.

winning fillies and mares including Ha Ha, Belle du Jour, Sunday Joy, Zagalia,
Lovely Jubly, Bulla Borghese, Hasna and Polar Success as well as the likes of
Brief Embrace, Superior Star and exciting youngsters including How Funny,
Regimental Gal, Fashion Victim, Shamekha, Annie La Vie and Rinky Dink.
As well as being the place to buy precocious racehorses of all ages, the Magic
Millions Yearling Sale series is now being highlighted as the stepping stone for
future star broodmares.
Apart from Seto Flowerian other mares to be sold by Magic Millions in recent
years include the dam of the American Champion Azeri, this year’s Australian
Derby winner Clangalang and the Golden Slipper heroine Merlene.
The Seto Flowerian colt was clearly the star during today’s session. The
second highest priced foal sold, another colt by Sunday Silence, was knocked
down for A$1.59 million. Today’s first session of the JHRA Select Foals Sale
averaged A$433,402 for 109 sold. The final session, which includes ten other
