 1. Choisir tops World Thoroughbred rankings

01/7/2003

As of June 30 the Paul Perry-trained colt Choisir would be the first horse invited to contest the Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Oct. 25 at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.

The brilliant chestnut vaulted to the top of the World Thoroughbred rankings for the sprint division following his Group 1 Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot.

Choisir’s rating of 122 puts him above the outstanding Arazi colt Congaree and Golden Jubilee runner-up Airwave (Air Express).

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) and Breeders’ Cup Limited have established an international rankings system for horses being pointed to the eight Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships races.

An international panel of racing officials will produce weekly rankings for the world's top 10 Thoroughbred runners in each division, which began on June 9 and running through the event. Rankings will be determined by a weighted analysis of the horses' performances in select graded stakes from around the world. Initial rankings will reflect six of the eight divisions: the Distaff, Filly and Mare Turf, Mile, Turf, Sprint and Classic. The Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies divisional rankings will commence in late summer.

While Choisir is the only Australian-bred horse rated, shuttle stallions or ex shuttle stallions feature prominently in most divisions.
