Living
Spirit will be sent for a break and aimed at the Group One Blue Diamond Stakes
at Caulfield in February after a sensational win in the $25,000 January Plate
(1200m) at Sandown today.
Continuing the great run of Lindsay Park trainer Tony McEvoy, the filly enjoyed
the run of the race before striking the front at the top of the straight and
then careering away from her rivals for the easiest of wins.
Bred by Collingrove Stud and owned by the Swettenham and Lindsay Park
Syndicates, fronted by Robert Sangster and Mark Pilkington respectively, Living
Spirit made it two wins from three starts with today’s success.
"She should be unbeaten and have three wins from three starts,"
winning trainer Tony McEvoy said. "When she finished third at the
Flemington meeting at Werribee she was in the gates for a long time and then was
just looking in the other direction and missed the start by two lengths."
After getting well back and out of her ground at Werribee, the Hennessy filly
stormed home from the rear of the field to grab the minor end of the prize.
On debut the filly, who is from the Dequetteville Stakes winner Livelihood,
broke a track record in a near five length win over 900 metres at Murray Bridge
in South Australia.
"She had shown average ability at home early on," McEvoy said.
"But as soon as we put the blinkers on her she improved sharply straight
away."
McEvoy, who holds a big lead in both the Adelaide and Melbourne training
premierships, said the filly would be given her chance at better races in her
next few starts.
"We’ll freshen her and look at running in the either the Prelude or
Preview before hopefully contesting the Blue Diamond," he added referring
to Victoria’s richest two-year-old race.
"She’s a big, deep, strong filly with plenty of strength and you could
see that today at the end of the 1200 metres," McEvoy added. "The win
was super impressive."
Collingrove Stud will be offering a half sister to Living Spirit at next
week’s Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.
The Rory’s Jester mare Livelihood, who is a three quarter sister to South
Australia sire and Maribyrnong Plate winner Happy Giggle, will be represented in
the auction by a Marauding filly.
She will go under the hammer as lot number 622 on the final day of four select
sessions at the country’s initial sale of the year.
