The
Magic Millions Perth Premier Yearling Sale media launch was held last Friday
evening in the Presidential Suite at the Burswood International Resort.
The magnificent surroundings and stunning panoramic vista of Perth City at
sunset were a fitting backdrop to the presentation of what is regarded as one of
the best catalogues of yearlings ever offered in Western Australia.
Champion Western Australian bred galloper, Northerly, is the highest stake
earner to be bred in this country and the first horse to ever grace the cover of
a Magic Millions Yearling Sale catalogue, appropriately the 2003 Perth edition.
307 lots will be offered in the two select sessions of the sale, which begin at
6pm on Tuesday 11th March and continue the following day at 4.30pm.
The sale will conclude with the 130 yearlings scheduled for the Autumn session
to be held from 5.00pm on Friday 14th March.
One of the highlights of the sale will undoubtedly be the 28 yearlings to be
offered, by the sensational sire Metal Storm.
Metal Storm is currently ranked alongside Australasia's 15 top stallions by
earnings with a comparatively small number of runners and buyers will keenly
seek out his last commercial crop of yearlings.
It would not surprise to see Lot 47 the Metal Storm filly out of Bonny Guest
score the top price of the sale. She is a full sister to the high-class sisters
Kalatiara (Western Australian Guineas and USA Group 3 winner), Kentiara (7 wins
and Group placed) and Antique (3rd 2002 VRC Oaks).
Consistent sire Bletchley Park also has 28 yearlings catalogued and his top
rankings as a leading sire in South East Asia and Western Australia will ensure
his offspring will prove popular with serious buyers.
Old Spice continually comes up with group performers and with Melbourne,
Australian and Perth Cups added to Oaks, Derbies and Railway Stakes in the past
few seasons, his eight sons and daughters should create plenty of interest.
Northerly's sire Serheed has seven listed for sale while leading sprint stallion
Rubiton has a well related colt and filly in the select session.
Sadler's Wells consistent son Scenic was one of the most successful sires at the
corresponding sale last year. He has been among the leading Australian sires for
the past few seasons and his 31 yearlings should again be in demand.
First season sire Dr Johnson's 15 yearlings will be sort out, after the stakes
win of Magic Aces (his only runner to date) two weeks ago.
Other proven leading sires represented are
Rory's Jester, Zedrich,Thunder Gulch, Nediym, Gilded Time, Danewin, Encosta De
Lago, Don't Say Halo, O'Reilly, Citidancer, Tribu and Grand Lodge.
The only Grand Lodge yearling catalogued is an extremely imposing colt out of a
Sir Tristram mare who will certainly command high interest.
First crop sires Second Empire (second top European two year old of
1997) and the Rory's Jester stallion Speed Week have a great line up of
yearlings to be offered along with Catbird (one of the leading first season
sires at the recently completed Magic Million Gold Coast Sale).
Eastern Standard's very impressive first up win last Saturday at Ascot marked
the death of his sire Switch In Time. The leading NSW sire by winners for the
past seven seasons, Switch In Time has sired 349 winners of 1,660 race and over
$14 million in prizemoney.
Colin Webster purchased Eastern Standard at the 2000 Magic Millions Perth sales
for $20,000. He was the only Switch In Time yearling listed and is out of the
Lunchtime mare Grand Dejeuner.
Eastern Standard has now won seven races from 15 starts including a dead heat
with Lawmaker in the last Kalgoorlie Boulder Cup, a listed event.
The two year old winner at Ascot's last meeting Shout From Maroof completed a
notable double for his sire Maroof last Saturday. A few hours previously
Maroofity had taken out the Wakefeild Challenge Stakes, a Group 2 event for two
year olds at Trentham in New Zealand.
Maroof is best known as the sire of the VRC Derby winner Hit The Roof from his
first crop of runners.
Shout From Maroof was offered at the 2002 Perth yearling sale but was passed in
after bidding only went to $7,000.
