 58. Inglis Classic Sale Winds Up in Sydney

22/01/2003

2003 San Miguel William Inglis and Son Ltd

The 2003 Classic Yearling Sale which commenced on Sunday afternoon and concluded yesterday averaged

$29,812 for 347 horses sold with an overall gross of $10,344,750, both marginally up on 2002.

The overall sale topper for the 2003 Classic Yearling Sale, lot 357, a colt by Flying Spur from the unraced Dehere mare Nuance (Fr) was heavily contested in the ring before finally being knocked down to Bloodstock Agent Anton Koolman on behalf of Hong Kong trainer Ricky Yiu. Offered by Kitchwin Hills as agent for Gordon Henderson the colt fetched $180,000.

"It was imperative that he x-rayed 100% clean when buying on behalf of a Hong Kong client and the fact that he did meant we could confidently pay good money," said Koolman.

"He was the standout horse of the sale and I had followed his history all the way through and have seem him on numerous occasions. A very athletic horse and his third and fourth dams were both champion racemares."

Bloodstock agent David Lamond outlayed $140,000 for lot 457, a Belong To Me filly from the mare Snarl, the second highest price overall at the sale.

"A beautiful filly. Beautifully balanced and a superb mover with a very powerful hind quarter. I will send her to the paddock for a few months before breaking her in," commented Lamond.

Victorian trainer Robbie Laing buying under the banner of Sutton Grange Racing purchased lot 486 for $115,000, a Fasliyev colt from the Star Watch mare Sveldte.

"I waited all day for him. He is a beautiful individual and I was very keen to buy a Fasliyev. Admittedly I didn’t think I would have to pay quite that much money for him but because he was such a standout in the sale it was no surprise that everyone was on him."

The Classic is becoming known as a trainers sale, with several of the country’s leading mentors all making their presence felt, including Gai Waterhouse (10), Graeme Rogerson (11), Robbie Laing (7), Noel Mayfield-Smith (6), Tim Martin (5), Bill Mitchell (5), John Symons (5), Mick Price (4), David Hall (5) and leading country conditioners Pat Farrell (7)and Mac Griffith (5).
