 28. Vinery Pay $900,000 for Sunday Silence Colt

11/01/2003

A new sales topper for the 2003 Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions Yearling Sale was reached in the early stages on tonight's third session when a stunning son of the champion Sunday Silence was sold to Vinery Stud.

Catalogued as lot number 455, the colt who is from the Miner's Mark dam Engraver, a half sister to the Group One winner Personal Business, was sold for $900,000.

After an opening bid of $100,000 offerings rose in $100,000 amounts to $400,000 when the bids were lessened to $50,000, but then came in quick succession rapidly rising to its resting place, just short of seven figures.

Vinery's owner Dr Tom Simon, flanked by Australian general manager Peter Orton, won the bidding duel.

"He was a striking individual," Orton said. "He has a great stallions pedigree and was a really nice type."

Orton said no decision would be made on who would be training the colt "for probably a year."

"He'll be sent to our pre-training property in Victoria and all of the early work will be done on him down there."

This colt was the first ever Sunday Silence yearling purchased by Vinery.
