Danehill
and Graeme Rogerson continued to be the pacesetters when the 2003 Magic Millions
Yearling Sale continued on January 10.
Rogerson, leading buyer on day one when he outlaid more than $1.7 million on 10
yearlings, topped the second day bidding with his purchase of a Danehill colt
for $320,000.
The colt, from the stakeswinning Sir Tristram mare Altrista, gave Danehill the
honor of being the sire of the top selling lots on the first two days of the
five-day sale.
A filly by Danehill had brought the top price of $700,000 when the sale opened
on January 9.
The second session did not reach the heights of the opening day but still saw12
lots sold for $200,000 or more with Australian-bred sires Strategic and
Octagonal matching the demand for yearlings by Danehill.
Strategic's growing popularity saw his filly from the Star Way mare Akita Star
bring the day’s second highest price of $275,000 to the bid of young Victorian
trainer Matt Hyland.
The high-priced Octagonal’s were $260,000 for his half brother to Catango from
the G3 winner Dancer’s Choice, purchased by South Africa’s Worldwide
Bloodstock, and $240,000 for his colt from Zoulany colt bought by Heinrich
Bloodstock of Queensland.
Sydney trainer John Morish also paid $240,000 for a Danehill filly out of
imported American mare Target Figure, an amount matched by international
bloodstock agent Adrian Nichol for a filly by first season sire Fasliyev from
Tears For Fears.
Melbourne trainer Rick Hore-Lacy added to his select buying from the top end of
the market when he paid $250,000 for a colt by Perugino from Testa Rossa’s
half sister Dapper’s Pride. Perugino is also the sire of Testa Rossa.
Graeme Rogerson curtailed his buying to only two lots at the seocnd session as
Gai Waterhouse came to the fore with six purchases for up to $100,000, taking
her total number of buys over the first two days to 14.
She will also be training the eight yearlings purchased at the first two
sessions by syndicator Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds.
Other free—spending buyers have included agent Mark Pilkington on behalf of
Lindsay Park (11 lots), syndicators Lawton Racing (9), Worldwide Bloodstock of
South Africa (7), UK agent Adrian Nichol (5) and trainers Lee Freedman (6) and
Tim Martin (5).
