 16. Strategic Stars at QBBS Sale

07/01/2003

After a lively beginning on the first day of the QBBS yearling sale vendors found the going more difficult on the second and final day on Sunday. It is surprising then that the eventual sales-topper came just ten lots from the end of the sale.

The chestnut colt by Woodlands Stud’s champion first season sire Stategic out of the Ideal Planet mare Elite Sparkle was purchased by P. Wilson for 75,000.

It was another son of Strategic that topped the opening session. Tony Sears paid $60,000 just 5 lots into the sale for a chestnut out of the Noalcoholic mare Good Mixer.
Eliza Park Stud’s Johan Cruyff made an auspicious sales ring debut when his only yearling on offer, a bay or brown colt out of the Aurealis mare Mesaluna, was snapped up by G. Burns for 42,500.

On the opening day 66 yearlings were sold and 23 passed in for a gross of $953,500 at an average of $14,447. On the final day 104 yearlings sold but a disappointing number of 83 were passed in. The gross totalled $856,500 at an average of $8236.

Overall 170 yearlings sold, 106 were passed in, for a gross aggregate of $1.795 million at an average of $10,559.

This was a decline in both gross and average compared to last year when 180 yearlings sold, 63 were passed in for an aggregate of $2,352,000 at an average of $13,066.
