01/01/2003

With 17 first crop yearlings available at the Conrad Jupiters – Magic Millions Yearling Sale in 2003, champion two-year old Favorite Trick came up with a timely first stakes winner when Sun Trick won the US$161,761 Riley Allison Futurity by 4 1/2 lengths at Sunland Park on Sunday.

It was the eleventh winner from 32 starters for Favorite Trick, which became the first two-year-old to earn Horse of the Year honours in the U.S. since the great Secretariat achieved the feat in 1972. Favorite Trick has also sired two stakes-placed horses, duel Grade 2-stakes placed Tricks Her and two-time stakes-placed Kickin Kountry. With the year drawing to a close Favorite Trick’s first crop have earned $523,974.

Sum Trick is the first stakes winner out of the unraced mare Missuma (Procida), a half sister to 1981 Belmont Stakes winner Summing (Verbatim), and Shuvee H. (G2) winner One Sum (One For All), which won 12 of her 34 starts in the late 1970’s with earnings of just under US$400,000.

Favorite Trick shuttles between Walmac Farm, Kentucky and Collingrove Stud, Victoria. His Magic Millions yearlings include;
Lot 107 bay colt ex Rockets Galore (Whiskey Road) a dual Group 3 winner and dam of 3 winners – family of Rory’s Jester.
Lot 299 bay filly ex Adeewin (Snaadee) – first foal of a brilliantly fast mare whose dam is a half-sister to Shaftesbury Avenue.
