Premier Sale Concludes

Lamond made a winning bid of $260,000 for a half sister to VATC 1000 Guineas
(G1) winner Lady Of The Pines to top the final day of the Melbourne Premier
Yearling sale.
Consigned by Devon Park Stud, the filly is by Vinery Stud’s Red Ransom (USA),
sire of the undefeated Blue Diamond prospect Halibery. The sales topper is the
seventh foal of the Melbourne winning Tolomeo (Ire) mare Calemeo a half sister
to VATC Elders Mile (G1) winner Caledonian Boy.
" The horse of the sale. I respect the stallion and have been waiting to
find the right one and this filly with such a great pedigree and a beautiful
type certainly fitted the bill," Lamond said.
Paul Perry paid $160,000 for the very next lot through the ring, a colt by
Gilded Time (USA) out of Calemoss (Twig Moss (Fr)). The chestnut is a half
brother to the stakes winning Rory’s Jester filly Heaps Of Fun. His dam
Calemoss is a winning half sister to Calemeo dam of the sales-topping Red Ransom
(USA) filly and like the sale-topper was consigned by Devon Park Stud.
Before the sale the widely touted sales-topper was the full brother to
outstanding sprinter Rubitano, which entered the arena as the fourth last lot of
the sale. Sir Lankan based businessman Muzzafa Yaseen and Iris O'Farrell under
the banner of Teeley Assets signed the ticket for the $230,000 brown colt.
Yaseen has tasted success previously at the Premier sale. He purchased the top
priced lot, a $220,000 Canny Lad filly, at the 1994 Premier sale. Named
Shantha’s Choice she didn’t set the racetrack alight but she is one of the
most valuable broodmares in Australia after producing the four-time Group One
winner Redoute's Choice and AJC Spring Champion Stakes (G1) hero Platinum
Scissors.
Consigned by Rubiton Bloodstock the brown colt was sired by the evergreen
Rubiton. He is the eleventh foal of the stakes-placed The Judge mare Mrs Soffel
the dam of VRC Salinger Stakes (G1) and Newmarket H. (G1) winner Rubiton and his
stakes winning sister Rubitoff.
Overall 345 of the 431 yearlings offered sold for an aggregate of $14,135,500 at
an average of $40,972. Following a steady start to the sale on Monday the trade
was extremely brisk today. There were increases across the board with a 12%
increase in average and a 18% increase in aggregate over what was a satisfying
result at last years sale when 281 yearlings grossed $9,746,000 at an average of
$34,683. The clearance rate improved to a very pleasing 80%. The median also
increased from $30,000 to $35,000.
Associate Director and Melbourne Manager Peter Heagney was deservedly delighted
with today’s results after an enormous amount of work has gone into restoring
this sale to the third major yearling sale in Australia.
" I was absolutely thrilled with today’s results and the strong buyer
interest throughout the day on quality horses. A particularly good result for
Victorian vendors who opted to sell their top yearlings at this sale, with 14
horses selling for $100,000 and above."
