The
Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale regained its momentum on February 11 when the
demand for quality horses pushed figures close to record levels.
The second premier session produced a 12 percent increase on last year’s
average price to $41,127, a vast improvement on a struggling first day when the
average fell behind the 2002 figure of $36,850.
The second day generated a massive 18 percent increase in the overall gross to
$14,065,500 from 342 yearlings sold.
A clearance rate of 80 percent included a total of 14 horses selling for
$100,000 or more, 12 going through the Oaklands Junction sale ring during the
second session.
Sydney agent David Lamond paid the highest price of $260,000 for a filly by Red
Ransom from Tolomeo mare Calemeo, the dam of VATC 1000 Guineas winner Lady Of
The Pines.
"I respect the stallion and have been waiting to find the right one and
this filly with such a great pedigree and a beautiful type certainly fitted the
bill," Lamond said.
The filly will be syndicated and trained in Sydney by Ron Quinton.
The much admired full brother to dual G1 winner Rubitano, by Rubiton from Mrs
Soffel, was sold for $230,000 to Teeley Assets Pty Ltd of Victoria.
Colts by Gilded Time and Encosta De Lago brought $160,000 and $150,000 while
another Red Ransom filly sold for $140,000.
The Gilded Time colt was purchased by Newcastle trainer Paul Perry while the
Encosta De Lago colt, a half brother to the G3 winner Gold Lottey, went to Brian
Durran, a client of the Ross McDonald stable.
