MELBOURNE PREMIER SALE

A
top price of $115,000 highlighted a disappointing opening session of the 2003
Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands Junction on February 10.
The average slipped from last year’s figure of $36,850 to $35,769 and is well
behind the record of $42,208 set in 2000. The session ended with 156 lots sold
for a total of $5,580,000.
Unrealistic reserves set by vendors were seen as the cause for the market
downturn as the clearance rate reached only 73 percent.
The figures would have been better if a bid of $155,000 had been accepted for a
colt by Marju.
His pass in left the day’s top price honours with a filly by Flying Spur from
the unraced Star Way mare Sister St Claire. She is related to Octagonal and Don
Eduardo and was purchased by NZ bloodstock agent Paul Moroney to be trained by
his brother Mike Moroney.
Moroney was the leading buyer at the opening session, spending $355,000 on four
yearlings.
The top price for a colt was $100,000, paid by prominent NSW breeding
figure Tony Bott for a son of Perugino.
Bott is currently redeveloping the former Motto Park Stud at Raymond Terrace
north of Newcastle.
A total of six lots brought $90,000 each, including two by the deceased End
Sweep and others by Rory’s Jester, Bubble Gum Fellow, Xaar and Second Empire.
