 5. Aussie-Bred Wins At Santa Anita

01/02/2003

The Australian-bred mare Brocky’s Dream won the feature race at Santa Anita on Wednesday, a $US65,000 Allowance for Fillies and Mares, but punters were hardly cheering the result.

The 5yo daughter of Land Speed Record was sent out as the 37/1 longshot in the 9-horse field. She was ridden by the remarkable 56-year old veteran Laffit Pincay Jr. who, two races earlier, reached another milestone in his remarkable riding career when guiding Saxony to a one-length victory in the fifth race at Santa Anita. For the winningest jockey in history it was trip number 9,500 to the winners’ circle.

“I’ve been trying to win a race every day for the last two weeks,” Pincay said after victory No. 9,500, “and it seems like I’ve had a lot of seconds. But today I finally got it.”

A bargain $3,000 purchase at the 2000 Magic Millions Perth sale, Brocky’s Dream was one of the best two-year olds in the west in the 2000-2001 season. She started 9 times winning the WATC N.J. Way S. L (1100 m.), two handicaps at Ascot over 1000 m. and finished second in the WATC Karrakatta Plate (G2) and third in the WATC Crystal Slipper Stakes (LR). In July last year Brocky’s Dream ran third in the Listed Great Lady M H. over 5 furlongs at Hollywood Park.

Revalon (Beau Sovereign), the dam of Brocky’s Dream, is a daughter Strathhaven (Charlton) the winner of 3 races and third in the 1983 W.A. Oaks (G1). Strathhaven is a half sister to the grand old West Australian stalwart Old Spice (Kaoru Star) the sire of the Group 1 winners Rogan Josh, Old Comrade, Old Money, Spectrum, Old Nick, Old Role, Natasha and Forge On.

Brocky’s Dream comes from the fourth crop by the cleverly named Land Speed Record a son of Bluebird out of the speedy Rancher mare Rancheetah.
A half-brother to 2000 QTC Cup (G2) winner Galopini (Canny Lad), Land Speed Record won the VRC Maribyrnong Trial S. (LR) (900 m.), VATC Ripponlea H. (1200 m.) finished second in the VATC Rancher Quality H. (LR) and fourth in the VRC Sires' Produce S. (G1), VATC Blue Diamond Prelude (G3), Debutant S. (LR). Although he failed to win at three Land Speed Record was runner-up in the VATC Mercedes-Benz H. (LR) and third in the VRC W.J.T. Clarke S. (LR).
