 43. Choisir Home Alone in Lightning

09/02/2003

The William Inglis Premier sale beginning on Monday February 10 received a further boost when the Collingrove Stud based Danehill Dancer, who had 8 yearlings catalogued, sired his first Australian Group 1 winner when Choisir scorched home alone in the $402,000 Teac – Lightning Stakes at Flemington today.

Nobody could ever doubt the ability of Choisir however the headstrong chestnut has often been his own worst enemy.

At two Choicir won the Group 3 STC Skyline Stakes (1200 m.), Listed AJC Breeders' Plate (1000m) and the Inglis 2Yo Classic (1200 m.). His impressive list of minor placings included seconds in the AJC Sires' Produce S. (G1), STC Pago Pago S. (G2) and thirds in the STC Golden Slipper Stakes (G1) and AJC Champagne Stakes (G1).
He returned in the spring to win the Group 2 VRC Emirates Classic (1200 m.) as well as running third in the Group 1 MRC Caulfield Guineas, Group 2 AJC Stan Fox Stakes and Group 3 VRC L'Oreal Paris Plate.

Choisir drew the rails position in the Lightning and Glen Boss was happy to let the handsome three-year old stride along on his own as his 8 top-class opponents headed to the outside rail. With nothing around him to fire him up Choisir strode out boldly and very tractably. At the halfway point he was moving so easily within himself that it was apparent that Choisir would be in the finish. On the line he had a margin of three-quarters of a length over last years winner Spinning Hill (Dolphin Street) with the surprise 40/1 chance Azevedo (Helissio) running home for third a further 2 ¼-lengths back.

A $55,000 purchase from the Alabama stud consignment at the 2001 Classic Sale by trainer Paul Perry, Choisir is the fourth foal out of the Sydney winning Lunchtime mare Great Selection who died in 2001. Great Selection is a daughter of the Biscay mare Pensive Mood who is out of the former very useful Neville Begg trained mare Staid (Minor Portion), winner of 4 races including the STC Christmas Cup.

Choisir will be aimed at the Oakleigh Plate (G1) on February 22 and the Newmarket H. on March 8. He will be attempting to join the select list of sprint champions Schillaci and Placid Ark to achieve the treble.
