With
the announcement that French Deputy (USA) will be joining their stallion roster
this spring, Arrowfield Stud have effectively secured the two best sire sons of
two-time leading North American sire Deputy Minister available to breeders
anywhere in the world.
French Deputy will be joining Dehere (USA) whose star continues to rise. It may
seem incongruous to say that a stallion who sired a Golden Slipper winner, Belle
Du Jour, and a world class middle distance horse, Defier, from his second
Australian crop that Dehere (USA) was deemed to have made a slow start to his
stud career. It was a similar story in America for Dehere (USA) with the
multiple Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placed Graeme Hall coming from his second
northern hemisphere crop. If any or all of those horses had come from his first
crop Dehere’s fate may have been different. By the time they were beginning to
make a noise on the racetrack Coolmore was already negotiating Dehere’s sale
to Japan.
It turned out to be good luck for Arrowfield who secured the southern hemisphere
breeding rights from the JBBA. The timing could not have been better with Defier
proving one of Australasia's top weight-for-age performers with a series of
stunning performances including his win over a star-studded line-up in the Group
1 George Main Stakes at Randwick and runner-up to the champion Northerly in the
W.S. Cox Plate.
Last year in the U.S. the Dehere (USA) flag was flown with distinction by his
outstanding three-year old daughter Take Charge Lady - winner of 7 races and
$3,228,693 including the Ashland Stakes (G1), Spinster Stakes (G1), Alcibiades
Stakes (G2), Fair Grounds Oaks (G2), Silverbulletday Stakes (G3), Dogwood Stakes
(G3), second in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), Gazelle H. (G1), Golden Rod Stakes (G2),
Falls City H. (G2). Take Charge Lady was one of three Eclipse award finalists
for the title of champion filly or mare.
At the end of the season Dehere (USA) finished second to El Prado as leading
North American sire and, with the absence of Danehill (USA), the title of the
most successful shuttle stallion standing in Australia. Dehere finished a very
credible eighth leading sire in Australia last season and is currently in the
top five this season.
At Caulfield on Saturday the Mike Moroney-trained Feel The Noise raced clear to
win the Listed $75,000 JRA Stakes (1100) to became the forty-third stakes
winners for Dehere.
A $40,000 purchase by Paul Moroney at the 2000 Inglis Classic sale the 4yo
gelding was recording his first stakes win and fifth win overall from 19 starts.
His earnings jumped to almost $254,000 following his 2 ½-length win over Irish
Pride (Night Shift (USA)) with Tully Dane (Danehill (USA)) a half-length back in
third place.
Feel The Noise is the second foal of the speedy Chimes Square mare Slade. Winner
of 7 of her 25 starts on the N.S.W. provincial circuit Slade has begun her
broodmare career in promising fashion. Her first foal is the Noel Mayfield Smith
trained colt Shockeroo (Hurricane Sky), winner of 7 of his 30 starts for
earnings approaching $150,000.
Her third foal, the 3yo colt Pick Pocketer (Bluebird (USA)), has won 4 of his 8
starts to date in Victoria.
Chimes Square, a stallion whose career was severely restricted by fertility
problems, is proving a more than useful broodmare sire. Another of his
daughters, Trevigo, produced the crowd pleasing Treviscay. The 5yo son of Our
Maizcay has an electrifying turn of foot that he used to good affect to overhaul
Alpine Express in the Rough Habit Hcp (1200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Trainer
Nick Flouskos is eying the riches at the Sydney autumn carnival for the likeable
5yo gelding who has earned over $270,000 with 7 wins from 30 starts.
Dehere (USA) may have been unlucky not to sire a stakes double on Saturday. His
4yo daughter Special Grange (ex She’s So Special (NZ) by Sound Reason (CA))
was forced back to the worst part of the track in the straight but still
finished powerfully to overhaul all bar Skewiff (Mookta) in the Listed $75,000
Moduline – Hyderbad Plate (1200m) at Caulfield. At her previous start on
January 23 at Moonee Valley Special Grange had relegated Skewiff back into third
place when running out a 1 ¾-lengths winner of the $71,000 Thoroughbred
Breeders Victoria Plate.
