 41. Yell making a big noise for Anabaa

08/02/2003

Woodlands Stud’s Yell looked every inch a Group 1 winner of the future when he resumed from a four month break to win the Group 2 Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley on January 23. The three-year old gelding proved that assumption correct at his very next start with a determined win over the fast finishing Fields Of Omagh and the front running Innovation Girl in the $302,000 Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield toady. Yell becomes the first Australian-bred Group 1 winner for the champion sprinter Anabaa who stands the southerrn hemisphere season at Widden Stud.

Predictably the two three-year olds Innovation Girl (Rubiton) and Yell set the pace with Darren Gauci on Yell determined not to let Stephen Baster on Innovation Girl get away with an easy a lead. Patrick Payne on Northerly (Serheed (USA)) eased the champion back to the rear of the seven-horse field. Just in front of him was Fields Of Omagh (Rubiton) who like Northerly was having his first start since the W.S. Cox Plate (G1) last October.

When it looked as if Yell and Innovation Girl would fight out the finish when they kicked clear in the straight, Fields Of Omagh and Northerly were seen putting in fast finishing bursts down the middle of the track. On the line Yell had a margin of a long neck over Fields Of Omagh with Innovation Girl battling on strongly for third a half head away followed by the hard charging Northerly. Yell covered the 1400m in 1:22.58 to become the sixth consecutive three-year old to in the C.F.Orr Stakes following Barkada (2002), Desert Sky (2001), Redoute’s Choice (2000), Grand Archway (1999) and Special Dane (1998).

A second crop son of Anabaa, Yell is his dual hemisphere sires fifth Group One winner, and surprisingly the first at a distance of less 1600 metres, following the success of Anabaa Blue (Prix du Jockey Club Gr 1 (2400 m.), Rouvres (Prix Jean Prat Gr 1 (1800 m.), Amonita (Prix Marcel Boussac Gr 1 (1600 m.) and Precision (The Hong Kong Cup Gr 1 (2000 m.).

Bred by Woodlands Stud Yell is the first foal of the smart stakes winning filly Vocalist (Bluebird) winner of the Canberra Black Opal Preview (LR), second in the STC Tea Rose Stakes (G2) and third in the Canberra Black Opal Stakes (G2). Vocalist is a half sister to Anthems (Palace Music) winner of 10 races, 6 of them stakes including QTC Sires' Produce Stakes (G1) and Castlemaine Classic (G1).
