 30. International Double For Beautiful Crown

06/02/2003

With winners at Doomben and Santa Anita, Alanbridge Stud’s Beautiful Crown has had a highly successful week. Corona Classic, one of a handful of runners left by Beautiful Crown from his two seasons at stud in the U.S., ran away with the feature race at Santa Anita on Wednesday, a US$56,000, 1 1/16-mile optional claiming event for California-breds.

Trained by former D Wayne Lukas assistant trainer Mike Marlow and ridden by the present leading jockey at Santa Anita, Patrick Valenzuela, Corona Classic (Beautiful Crown--Enduring Classic, by Fast Gold) defeated Evanders Challenge (Hollywood Brat--Lady T K O, by Stop the Fighting) by 7-lengths with General Store (General Meeting--Miss Minnelli, by Groovy) coming home third. It was the second win in 11 starts for the four-year old gelding who broke his maiden at Hollywood Park last year.

Corona Classic is one of just 28 foals left by Beautiful Crown in his two seasons in the U.S. The son of Chief’s Crown was secured for Australia when he became available as a result of a court case.
Another of his successful U.S progeny is Crown Connection a winner of 5 races and stakes placed in the Princess Of Palms H. (LR).

The oldest Australian born progeny of Beautiful Crown are three-year olds and include the likable Tom Coureuse. The Clarry Connors trained gelding became the first Australian winner for Beautiful Crown when successful in a 2yo handicap at Rosehill Gardens in October 2001. He had already earned black-type when second behind Snowland (Snippets) in the Canonbury Stakes (LR) at Randwick on September 29 and later placed third behind Pillaging in the Group 1 VRC Sires Produce Stakes.

Last Saturday at Doomben the Roy Dawson -trained two-year old filly Crowned Lady scored a surprise win over the highly touted Windy Kate (Air Express). The second crop daughter of Beautiful Crown was a luckless fourth at her previous start at Doomben when beaten half a length by Carrier (Lake Coniston), which finished nearly three-lengths adrift of Crowned Lady on Saturday.

Beautiful Crown was a speedy racehorse himself winning 6 of his 14 starts and was stakes placed in the Harry Henson Stakes (L) at Hollywood Park. A good deal of his speed may have been inherited from his dam Beautiful Glass Pass the Glass) a sensational sprinter in the US, winning six of her seven starts including the El Encino Stakes (G3).

Beautiful Glass produced 7 foals, 6 raced, 4 winners including the top-class Jeannie Jones (Nijinsky) the winner of 5 races and $694,900, inc. Fantasy Stakes (G1).
Another product of Beautiful Glass is one of California’s leading stallions, Avenue Of Flags (Seattle Slew).

Beautiful Crown’s half sister Beautiful Aly (Alydar-Beautiful Glass) never made it to the races however she produced Tegwen (Nijinsky) a minor winner in England who produced Teggiano (Mujtahid) winner of the Meon Valley Stud Fillies Mile (G1) and the May Hill Stakes (G3) and runner-up in the Ribblesdale Stakes (G2).
