King
oF King, Desert Prince and Shovhog - three of the rising stars of the Australian
stallions ranks - came to the fore with outstanding wins by their classy
juveniles products on February 1.
Brian Russell reports:-
KING OF KINGS: The Australian input as the source of major winners in New
Zealand continued at Te Rapa.
King’s Chapel, a youngster foaled at Coolmore Stud in the Hunter Valley, took
command of New Zealand’s richest race, the $NZ500,000 Mercedes Super Bonus
Classique at Te Rapa.
Unbeaten in his three starts to date, King’s Chapel was bred at Coolmore for
New Zealand’s Norelands Stud and was sold through the 2002 Karaka sale
for$NZ35,000.
He is by the dual hemisphere serving King of Kings from Lower Chapel, an unraced
UK-bred three-quarter sister by champion European sprinter Sharpo to another
shuttle sire in College Chapel.
King of Kings is one of the most brilliant sons of Sadler’s Wells to come to
Australia. He won five of his seven career outings including two of Ireland’s
major juvenile events and the English Two Thousand Guineas.
King of Kings is out of a daughter of a Sir Gaylord sire, the speed imparting
Habitat, the same cross that produced Barathea.
DESERT PRINCE: The early predictions that Desert Prince would be a
big success as a sire for Woodlands Stud gained impetus when two of his first
crop Australian two-year-olds won at Rosehill and Morphettville.
Both winners, Kusi and Syrinx, are raced by Woodlands Stud owners Bob and Jack
Ingham and trained by John Hawkes.
Kusi stamped himself as a top class prospect with his debut win at Rosehill
while the filly Syrinx outclassed her rivals in the G2 Breeders’ Stakes at
Morphettville.
Syrinx is the third stakes winner bred by the Inghams from Group winner
Whistling, the others being Whistle Up and Noise.
Whistle Up is by Golden Slipper winner Canny Lad, the sire also of Naughty, the
minor Sydney winner which is the dam of Kusi.
Desert Prince is owned by Woodlands Stud in partnership with the Irish National
Stud.
He won five of his 11 starts including three G1 races at 1600 metres, the Irish
Two Thousand Guineas, Longchamp Prix du Moulin and Ascot Queen Elizabeth II
Stakes to be classified as the world champion three-year-old for 1998.
SHOVHOG: Impressive filly Jewel Peak’s win at Rosehill has her on the path to
emulating other members of her noted family.
One of the most illustrious two-year-olds in history, Luskin Star is a
three-quarter blood brother to Star Treasure, the grandam of Jewel Peak. They
are both by the Star Kingdom sire Kaoru Star.
Jewel Peak is from the unraced Zoffany mare Zoffany’s Treasure from the first
crop by Danehill’s briliant juvenile Shovhog.
Shovhog finished second to Prowl in the1998 Golden Slipper, while he won three
races and also earned minor prize money in Blue Diamond Stakes, Blue Diamond
Prelude, AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes, Illawarra Classic, Chivas Royal Stakes and
Roman Consul Stakes.
Shovhog is out of one of Luskin Star’s most brilliant fillies Startling Lass.
