 13. Fasliyev Top Gun Among New SIres

02/02/2003

Fasliyev can claim a points victory as the hotshot first season sire following the first round of 2003 yearling sales in Australia and New Zealand.

At the Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast, the son of Nureyev returned the best average among the outstanding line-up of 20 new sires that included Redoute’s Choice, Stravinsky, Orpen and Catbird.

He achieved an average of $111,660 from 25 lots sold, led by his filly out of Lower Chapel who was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifah Al Maktoum’s agent Tim Boland for $475,000.

Fasliyev then produced one of the top four lots at the Inglis Classic sale in Sydney, his colt out of Sveldte being purchased by Sutton Grange Racing for $115,000,

Those results were rivalled by the huge impact the multiple G1 winner made at the Premier sessions of the New Zealand National Sale at Karaka where his six-figure sellers included a colt from Sulina, for $NZ310,000 and a colt from Najaba going to a Hong Kong a buyer for $NZ170,000.

Leading trainers acquiring Fasliyev youngsters include Lee Freedman, Tony McEvoy, Gai Waterhouse, Tim Martin, Lee Curtis and John O’Shea.

Fasiliyev took the first season honours at the Gold Coast but Redoute’s Choice returned the best average at Karaka.

Redoute’s Choice had a massive 26 lots sell at the Magic Millions for the third best average of $110,865 among the new sires but with only three sold at Karaka he was third overall on average at $NZ118,333 behind his sire Danehill, Zabeel and Marju.

Stravinsky, Nureyev’s champion sprinter, had 14 of his first progeny sell at Magic Millions at an average of $NZ73,857 but he really excelled at Karaka where 11 of his progeny made six-figure sums, the most impressive being a half brother to Epsom Handicap winner Allez Suez at $400,000.

Orpen was also a real success story as he stood in his first year in Australia for only $10,000 yet had his first stock sell for up to $120,000 at the Magic Millions and $NZ100,000 at Karaka.

His four lots sold at the Magic Millions averaged $76,250 and all three ofered at Karaka average $NZ92,500.
