Causeway Filly Sets New World Record

It
was another day of records on the third day of the Tattersalls December Foal
Sale as the world record price for a filly foal was smashed when the daughter of
URBAN SEA sold for 1,800,000 guineas.
The session also saw huge rises across the board with new record levels for
trade on the third day of the foal sale. A total of 164 lots were sold for
8,513,900 guineas, 14% higher than last year's corresponding session. The
average of 51,914 guineas represented a rise of 24% whilst the median of rose
13% to 22,500 guineas. In total sixteen lots breached the 100,000 guineas
barrier compared to twelve in 2001.
Expectations were high as the foal by six time Group 1 winner GIANT'S CAUSEWAY
out of Arc winner URBAN SEA was led into the packed Tattersalls sales ring. The
half-sister to dual Derby winner GALILEO was offered from the Irish National
Stud on behalf of David and Ling Tsui's Sunderland
Holdings who raced the filly foal's illustrious Arc winning dam URBAN SEA. James
Kelly, manager of Lady O'Reilly's Castlemartin Stud, opened the bidding with
Rory Mathews, acting on behalf of Barbara Facchino's Barrouche
Stud, and Johnny McKeever, sitting with leading Irish breeder Pat O'Kelly, both
offering spirited opposition as the price surged past the million guineas
barrier. It wasn't long before last year's filly foal record of 1,100,000
guineas, paid for the SADLER'S WELLS half-sister to this filly, was history,
with James Kelly still setting the pace. As the bidding
reached 1,500,000 guineas, bloodstock consultant Michael Youngs entered the
fray, and it was Youngs, acting on behalf of Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Stud,
who was to deny Kelly with the winning bid of 1,800,000 guineas for the
beautifully bred filly. The record breaking daughter of GIANT'S
CAUSEWAY looks likely to be destined for Weber's Florida based farm.
Whilst the world record price for a colt foal of 2,500,000 guineas, paid for the
brother to GENEROUS at this sale in 1997, was never in danger, the 510,000
guineas realised by the DANEHILL colt out of the ROBERTO mare AL THERAAB
represented the second highest price ever paid for a colt foal in Europe. The
own brother to the 2001 French Listed winner BARSINE was offered from James
Broughton's Barton Stud and following initial interest from Godolphin's John
Ferguson and bloodstock agent Will Edmeades, it was Coolmore team who emerged
victorious with the colt being knocked down to
Irish veterinarian Demi O'Byrne.
Sons of SUNDAY SILENCE are rarely seen at auction outside Japan and the only
foal by Japan's phenomenal sire to be sold outside his home country this year
always likely to attract plenty of interest. The colt out of the Listed placed
DARSHAAN mare DARRERY and consigned by agent John Troy, is a
half-brother to Group 1 Gran Criterium third AL WAFFI, and was knocked down to
Godolphin's John Ferguson for 250,000 guineas. Ferguson saw off challenges from
Dublin based bloodstock agent John McCormack and French agent Gerard Larrieu of
Chantilly Bloodstock.
The Tattersalls December Foal Sale continues at 9.30am on Saturday, 30th
November.
