Stud’s Yell made a triumphant return to racing in the $150,000 Listed
Rosemount Estates-McEwen Trophy (1000m) at Moonee Valley on Saurday.
Australia’s reigning champion sprinter, Yell was making his first start since
finishing a close-up fourth to Private Steer (Danehill Dancer) in the Group 1
Doomben 10,000 on May 17.
From the outside barrier in the seven-horse field Darren Gauci was forced to
ease Yell back to second last to gain some cover. The quality son of Anabaa
relaxed beautifully on the bit as the speedy Dantana and Ruby Slipper (Rubiton)
carved out a steady pace. Once Gauci stocked up Yell before the turn he always
had Dantana’s measure but found a tough opponent in The Big Chill. But
Yell’s class told and he looked good value for the official margin of a neck
over The Big Chill (O’Reilly (NZ)-Icy Calm (NZ) by Western Symphony (USA))
with the consistent Danatana (Danzero-Big Sky Montana by Lord Seymour (Ire)) a
length back in third.
The victory took Yell's earnings to $1,279,550 from a record of 8 wins, 5
seconds and 2 thirds from 18 starts. He is expected to make his next start in
the $350,000 Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 13.
In his championship 3yo season Yell won the Group 3 C.S. Hayes Stakes (1200m) at
Moonee Valley and Group 2 Carlyon Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley before
registering his first Group 1 win over a crack field including Fields Of Omagh,
Innovation Girl, Northerly and Pernod in the C. F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at
Caulfield on February 6. He backed that up with a 3 ¼-length win in the Group 1
Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield three weeks later then made it three
consecutive Group 1 victories in the Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley
on March 22. Taken to Sydney Yell found the magnificent sprinting mare Spinning
Hill (Dolphin Street) 1 ¼-lengths too good in the Group 2 T.J. Smith Stakes
(1200m) at Randwick then rounded out his 3yo career with a fourth in the Group 1
Doomben 10,000.
Bred by Woodlands Stud Yell is the first foal of the smart stakes winning filly
Vocalist (Bluebird) winner of the Canberra Black Opal Preview (LR), second in
the STC Tea Rose Stakes (G2) and third in the Canberra Black Opal Stakes (G2).
Vocalist is a half sister to Anthems (Palace Music) winner of 10 races, 6 of
them stakes including QTC Sires' Produce Stakes (G1) and Castlemaine Classic
(G1).
Vocalist has a three-year old Octagonal colt named Bellow who in his only
racetrack appearance was third in a 2yo race at Canterbury on April 30, a
yearling filly by Strategic and was served by Desert Prince last season.
A second crop son of Anabaa (Danzig), who shuttles from the Head family’s
Haras Du Quesnay, France to Widden Stud, Yell is one of five Group One winners
sired by the former champion European sprinter. An untimely accident in France
has meant that Anabaa will make a delayed start to his southern hemisphere
season this spring.
