A
day after Foss Way gave Woodland Stud’s Desert Prince his first stakes winner
when successful in the Group 3 Solario Stakes, the Mick Channon-trained Mail the
Desert went one better by becoming Desert Prince’s first Group 1 winner when
successful in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.
The two-year old filly defeated Luminata (Indian Ridge-Smaoineamh by Tap On
Wood) by a head with Pearl Dance (Nureyev-Ocean Jewel, by Alleged) a neck back
in third. It was the second win in 7 starts for Mail The Desert, which became
the first winner for Desert Prince when she was successful in a fillies'
Conditions Stakes at Windsor in May.
A Ire54,000 purchase at the 2001 Goffs Orby Sale, Mail The Desert (Desert
Prince-Mail Boat by Formidable) is the third foal of his unraced dam, which is a
half-sister to Dry Dock (High Line) winner of the Chester Vase (G3) and placed
in the English St. Leger (G1) and Great Voltigeur Stakes (G2). Mail Boat’s dam
Boathouse (Habitat) was stakes placed in the Sun Chariot Stakes (G2) and is a
half sister to six stakes winners including former Newhaven Park stallion Buoy
(Aureole), Kedge (Petition), Anchor (Major Portion), Fluke (Grey Sovereign),
Balinger (Welsh Pageant), and Bireme (Grundy).
Anchor produced the multiple Group winner Sea Anchor (Alcide) a successful
stallion in New Zealand where he sired Australian Horse Of The Year Red Anchor.
Ripeck, the dam of Boathouse, is a half-sister to Packet the grand-dam of VRC
Edward Manifold Stakes winner Rubidium (Rubiton) and stakes winner Salivate
(Snippets). Gulistan, a full sister to Rubidium, is the dam of the duel Group 1
winner Dash For Cash (Secret Savings).
Incidentally, Rubidium was sold to Japan. Her three-year old daughter named Last
Blaze, by the ill-fated Japanese superstar Narita Brian, broke her maiden with
an impressive 1 ¼-lengths win at Kokura racecourse on August 25.
