Staaraq, a son of the imported1986 Melbourne Cup winner At Talaq was represented by a double at the meeting at Adelaide's Morphettville on Saturday. It was provided by the first crop four-year-old Phyll The Flyer and the three-year-old Rendelsham Star and they were both winning over1050 metres.

Trained by David Jolly, Phyll The Flyer was having his second start and second win, while Rendelsham Star was recording his second successive Adelaide win and his third from eight outings.Their speed is not surprising as Staaraq was a good Adelaide sprinter and their dams are by speed sires.

Staaraq has been standing at the Kenton Valley Park Stud at Mount Torrens on a fee of $2000. He was foaled in1992 following the mating of At Talaq at Lindsay Park Stud with the speedy Adelaide performer Miss Nisku, a daughter of the Northern Dancer sire Nisku and a grandaughter of a half-sister to Adelaide Cup winner Storm Glow.

Trained at Lindsay Park at Angaston by Colin Hayes for Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rasheed Al Maktoum, Staaraq's sire At Talaq won the three major races in Melbourne, the Melbourne Cup. L.K.S. Mackinnon Stakes and the C.F. Orr Stakes. In addition he was second in the Caulfield Cup and Australian Cup.

Before being sent to Australia, he had proved one of the best middle distance performers in Europe, winning the Grand Prix de Paris, finishing second in Germany's Grosser Preis von Baden, third in the Italian Derby and fourth in the English Derby. He also had the speed to lead all the way and win over six furlongs at England's Newmarket on his debut at two.

The sire from stud duties at Lindsay Park of Group1 winners Skating and Star of Maple, At Talaq was just starting to loom large as a high class sire when he died at the age of14 years. He was by English Derby winner Roberto and from a half-sister to the champion Canadian sprinter and good New Zealand sire One Pound Sterling.
