Story
By Chris Scholtz
Shuttle stallion Desert Prince is on the board as a Group One sire following
victory by his filly Mail The Desert in Ireland’s prestigious G1 Moyglare Stud
Stakes at the Curragh on September 1.
The Mick Channon-trained youngster became the first UK-trained winner of the
seven furlong event since 1996.
The filly was ridden by Steve Drowne, giving the English rider his first success
in Ireland and only his second win in a G1 race.
Mail The Desert, who cost 58,000 guineas as a yearling, was bred in Ireland by
Sean Coughlan and caps a big year for him as he also bred dual Derby winner High
Chaparral.
Mail The Desert had finished second in the G3 Prestige Stakes at Goodwood at her
previous start and her overall record now stands at two wins, one second and one
third in seven starts.
She is the only winner from three foals to race produced by the unraced
Formidable mare Mail Boat but her success has big ramifications for Australian
breeedrs who supported Desert Prince in his first seasons in Australia.
The grandson of Danzig, by Green Desert, has been standing at Woodlands Stud in
the Hunter Valley with his first Australian-bred progeny to begin racing this
season.
Desert Prince was the champion European 3YO miler of 1998 when his wins included
the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot, the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and
the G1 Prix du Moulin at Longchasmp.
His standing among young sires in the northern hemisphere was reflected at the
2001 Houghton yearling sale in England where Sheikh Maktoum al Maktoum paid 2.3
million guineas for his colt from Park Express, the third highest price ever for
a yearling in Europe and a record for a first season sire.
His first Australian yearlings sold this year for up to $250,000 with 14 sold at
the Australian Easter Yearling Sale for an average of $103,393.
* DANEHILL filly Danehurst produced her customary late burst to cut down Lady
Dominatrix, a daughter of Danehill Dancer, in the G2 Flying Five at The Curragh
on September 1.
Wearing blinkers for the first time, Danehurst bounced back from a G1 Nunthorpe
Stakes failure to take her record to seven wins from 13 starts for trainer Sir
Mark Prescott.
Danehurst had previously won three Listed race and was placed in the G1 Golden
Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and G1 Newmarket July
