Graduates of the Australian Easter Yearling Sale came to the fore at Randwick on
Saturday winning three stakes events.
Promising three year old filly RARE INSIGHT (2001 Easter $50,000) led the way,
followed by up and coming stayer RED TRINKET (2000 Easter $80,000) and enigmatic
but talented mare GWENDOLYN (1999 Easter $200,000) who claimed victory in the
last race on the card, AJC The Nivison L.
Insight to Spring
Classy filly RARE INSIGHT gave her male rivals a start and a beating to win the
AJC Stan Fox Stakes Gr 2 at Randwick on Saturday. The John Hawkes trained three
year old has always shown plenty of talent, winning three times and placing
twice from a brief career of just six starts.
Her prizemoney of $196,050 represents a great return on her modest purchase
price of just $50,000 at the 2001 Australian Easter Yearling Sale, when she was
snapped up by the Farrington Pinkerton Bloodstock agency.
Rare Insight was bred and offered for sale by the renowned Waikato Stud in New
Zealand and is a product of two of their resident stallions, being by the Last
Tycoon (IRE) horse O'Reilly from the stakes-placed Centaine mare Escada, who
raced in Melbourne under the name Centenaire. She comes from a solid Black Type
family including stakes-winners The Fatz, La Rose Noir, Giorgio, Urbane and
Pomcelle.
Centaine is fast emerging as a most potent broodmare sire, his daughters
producing top class performers Cent Home, Amalfi, Tully Thunder and Giovana in
addition to recent spring stakes-winners Sportsman, Presently and first starter
Spurcent, winner of the AJC Gimcrack Stakes L.
Trinket on Metrop Track
Gai Waterhouse looks set to dominate another running of the AJC Metropolitan Gr
1, with rising star RED TRINKET stamping himself as a legitimate contender
following a stylish win in the AJC Colin Stephen Handicap Gr 3. He now joins
stablemate DRESS CIRCLE (1998 Easter $100,000) as equal favourite for the race
and with just 49 kg must rate an undeniable chance.
Red Trinket runs in the red and black Gooree Stud colours, but was knocked down
to Waterhouse at the 2000 Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $80,000. He is a
small compact well muscled bay with a good work ethic and a great appetite for
racing. Few horses thrive in the stable as well as this fellow and while he
lacks the typical rangy physique of a stayer, his sheer love of running and
stable life make him the perfect candidate to withstand a long and arduous
campaign.
Offered by Coolmore Stud as agent, he is the first foal of the unraced Woodman
mare Serengeti Park (USA) who produced Red Trinket as the result of a Northern
Hemisphere cover to champion miler Lure, a son of Danzig who has suffered from
fertility problems throughout his stud career.
Despite his difficulties, Lure has had considerable representation in
Australasia through the Coolmore practice of covering mares to Southern
Hemisphere time and bringing them down under to foal. From 19 Australian bred
runners, he has produced 15 winners, highlighted by Red Trinket and the talented
stakes-winner Angling, who's career was cut short by injury.
The Lure bloodline will gain maximum exposure in Australia next year when the
first crop of his Group One winning son Orpen (USA) hit the sales ring. He
boasts a magnificent female pedigree and scored his Group One as a two year old
in the Prix Morny at Deauville over 1200 metres.
Buyers won't have to wait long to get a look at the Orpen (USA) stock with more
than 20 youngsters by the sire entered for the 2003 Classic Yearling Sale in
January.
Black Type for Shame's Little Sister
Flashy bay filly SHALANG (2001 Easter $160,000) zoomed home from the tail of the
field to grab third in the AJC Dulcify Quality L and gain some valuable Black
Type to offset her already attractive pedigree. The daughter of Langfuhr (Can)
is a half-sister to former high class mare Shame, and bears a striking
resemblance to her older half-sister who also sported a prominent white blaze
and socks.
Shalang was purchased on behalf of clients by bloodstock agent Colm Santry who
was quick to point out that the family may get another boost in coming weeks,
with Shame's son Evander threatening to live up to his earlier potential and
land a stakes race of his own.
Delta in Top Form
Much travelled galloper DELTA FORM (1998 Easter $85,000), the Aussie bred former
South African champ now competing in the U.S.A, proved his last start upset win
at Del Mar no fluke by running home gamely for third in the Belmont Turf Classic
Gr 1 in New York at the weekend.
Given little chance of figuring against a high class field of turf runners,
Delta Form surprised again with his effort behind the winner Denon, who will
head towards the Breeders' Cup Turf.
Inglis Graduates In Hong Kong
Inglis Graduates scored a double at Happy Valley last Wednesday night with
ETERNAL START (1998 Easter $90,000) and talented sprinter GREEN DIAMOND (1999
Autumn $23,500).
The Alex Wong trained five year old Green Diamond overcame some roughhouse
tactics to record a narrow win, bringing his overall record to three wins, two
placings and prizemoney in excess of $300,000 from just five starts.
"He's done the job well tonight - he's got hit under the eye by another
horse's tooth in the early trouble in the race and it cut his eye open,"
reported jockey Douglas Whyte.
"He came back with blood pouring down his face and I thought for a minute
he might have bled."
Green Diamond was bred and offered for sale by Tamarin Stud in Victoria. He's a
son of former brilliant sprinter Mookta, winner of both the VRC Newmarket H Gr 1
and VATC Oakleigh P Gr 1.
Last Tycoon (IRE) is always near the top of the leading sires list in Hong Kong
and ETERNAL START is another of his progeny to find success in this testing
racing environment. The six year old is from the good producer Out of Africa
(GB), who's daughters have produced classy racemares Brief Kiss and Picholine.
Eternal Start has now won three races and close to $300,000 in prizemoney.
