 7. Strategic Does It Again

01/10/2002

Story By Chris Scholtz

The win of Ribald in the Breeders’ Plate at Randwick on September 28 added to the reputation of his sire Strategic as a source of early maturing quality two-year-olds.

A resident of the Cootamundra arm of Woodlands Stud, Strategic had got off to a powerhouse start as a sire of two-year-olds in the spring of 2000.

His first two runners that season were Breeders’ Plate winner Mistegic and Gimcrack Stakes runner up Fair Embace, a pair who have subsequently risen to be among the best sprinters in Australia.

Ribald is the first foal of the Night Shift mare Hosiery, a Sydney and Melbourne winner. The pedigree gives Ribald in-breeding to Northern Dancer and Star Kingdom - three doses including two through Todman.

Hosiery’s dam Stockings, a daughter of Whiskey Road, did not race, but she is a half-sister to the Bureaucracy stakes winner Regulations and Collant Noir.

Successful in seven races including five in Sydney, Collant Noir is the dam of the Quest for Fame Gosford Guineas winner and VRC Emirates Stakes and Rosehill Guineas third Pursuits.

Ribald’s third dam Black Tights won one minor race, but she was a half-sister to a Gimcrack Stakes winner, Black Shoes, and also to Gimcrack Stakes third Black Slipper. Black Shoes went on to win the Blue Diamond Stakes, Silver Slipper Stakes and San Domenico Stakes.

A half-brother to Clang, the sire of this year’s Golden Slipper winner Callaway Gal, Strategic was also impressive at two years, when he won five of eight outings including the Silver Slipper, Pago Pago Stakes and Skyline Stakes.

At three he was successful in the G1 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley, runner up in the VRC Lightning Stakes and third in the VRC Ascot Vale Stakes before he was retired to stud.

Strategic also has an impressive ‘colonial’ pedigree. Both his sire Zeditave and his grand sire the Judge were top local sprinters and his dam Sudden Impulse is bred on a cross of three Golden Slipper winners.

She was produced from a mating of Luskin Star with the Todman Slipper winner Sweet Embrace.

Todman’s grandson Ngawyni is the sire of Ribald’s third dam Black Tights. Sired in Western Australia by Todman’s prolific source of winners Zvornik, Ngawyni won19 races including the West Australian Derby, VRC Australian Cup and AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
