 49. Another Big Weekend for Rubiton

22/10/2002

Quality sprinter Rubitano (1999 Premier $95,000) returned to his brilliant best, with a dominant win in the MRC National Telecoms Group Sprint Gr 2. Lugging 58 kg and sitting three-wide throughout from a wide gate, he cruised away from his rivals in a sustained display of speed.

"When things go right he is a very powerful animal and he was always going to make his own luck from that alley," said trainer, Brian Mayfield-Smith.

Mayfield-Smith has done a terrific job to keep the five year old at his peak, given the amount of racing he's had this season, seven starts since mid July when he kicked off with a win in the MRC Sir John Monash Stakes L.

The win is yet another highlight for grand sire Rubiton who has enjoyed an epic renaissance this spring, through the deeds of Fields of Omagh, Innovation Girl and of course Rubitano.

The Tony McEvoy trained Fields of Omagh (1999 Premier $50,000) ran the race of his life in the MRC Caulfield Cup Gr 1, going down by a half neck to the champion Northerly. It's a harsh reality in life that sometimes your very best is not quite good enough.

To bump into a Cox Plate winner of Northerly's ability running in a Caulfield Cup, is a sizable stumbling block and in nearly any other year we would surely be hailing Fields of Omagh as the Caulfield Cup hero.

Rubiton continues to feature at the business end of the leading sires list for this season, holding down third position behind Northerly's sire Serheed (USA) and the indomitable Danehill (USA).

We anticipate this stellar burst of racetrack success will follow his progeny into the sales ring next year and with some 20 Rubiton youngsters entered for the 2003 Premier Yearling Sale, he is sure to be a major player in proceedings. Highlights among the Rubiton draft include a full brother to Rubitano, and a half-brother to mighty speedster Brawny Spirit.
