The
second day of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale started in explosive fashion
with three of the first six lots led through the ring making six figures sums
including the 280,000 guineas top price for the day.
The depth of the trade was illustrated by the number of lots breaking the six
figure barrier, with the total of 63 comfortably exceeding last year's tally of
56 after only two days of the sale. Trade on the second day was brisk with 205
lots being sold for a total of 11,505,000 guineas, taking the two day total to
22,669,500 guineas and within 3.4 million guineas of last years 5 day total. The
average on the second day was 56,121 guineas and the median 38,000 guineas.
The highest price for the day occurred early on in proceedings as the sixth lot
through, a bay colt by SINGSPIEL out of GIRL OF MY DREAMS consigned by Lavington
Stud was led into the ring. The half brother to this years Group 3 Princess
Margaret Stakes runner-up LUVAH GIRL was the subject of a protracted bidding
duel between Cheveley Park Stud's Manager Chris Richardson and Shadwell Estates'
Angus Gold, with the latter finally securing the handsome colt for the session
topping 280,000 guineas.
Newmarket based Blandford Bloodstock, headed up by the former BBA pair of Joss
Collins and Tom Goff have been busy during the sale thus far and it was Collins
who secured the highest priced filly for the day when he paid 250,000 guineas
for the DANEHILL daughter of MERITXELL consigned by J.K. Thoroughbreds for Mrs
Marie Costelloe. One of only three DANEHILL fillies in the catalogue, the half
sister to Group 2 winner, and multiple Group 1 placegetter ALMUSHTARAK saw
initial interest from Johnny McKeever of McKeever St. Lawrence before Collins
secured the filly on behalf of a North American client.
McKeever St. Lawrence have also been active during the opening two days of the
sale buying 13 lots during the two days with the highest priced of those being
the chesnut colt by GRAND LODGE out of TOP OF THE FORM who was knocked down to
Johnny McKeever for 225,000 guineas. Underbidder on the colt was Charlie
Gordon-Watson who was seated with Saeed Suhail who purchased the top priced lot
on the opening day. The sale proved to be yet another pinhooking success for
Timmy Hyde's Camas Park Stud having purchased the colt at the Tattersalls
December Foal sale for 75,000 guineas.
Irish bloodstock agent Demi O'Byrne also stamped his mark on proceedings buying
two of the top five lots of the day. Both of O'Byrne's high profile purchases
were by Coolmore's global star DANEHILL with the first being a colt out of the
STORM CAT mare GOLDEN CAT from Gerry Jennings' Carrowdore Castle Stud and the
grandson of Champion mare EUROBIRD was knocked down to O'Byrne for 220,000
guineas. O'Byrne's second DANEHILL purchase was the colt from Shane Ryan's
Kilboy Estate out of the LYCIUS mare SHINING PROSPECT , a half sister to this
year's Group 3 Vintage Stakes winner DUBLIN. Underbidder Johnny McKeever forced
O'Byrne to 250,000 guineas to secure the colt.
