 43. Cox Plate gallops for the stars

22/10/2002

Breakfast with the Stars this morning at Moonee Valley saw four of the Cox Plate contenders gallop.

Sunline (Greg Childs) worked over a mile and was clocked at 1.48.5, her last 400m in 24.50.

Ray Thomas from the Daily Telegraph reports that Greg Childs couldn't be happier with the way she has progressed since her second behind Lonhro in the Yalumba Stakes.

Bel Esprit (Kerrin McEvoy) worked with Thousand Guineas winner Macedon Lady over a mile, and although sitting three quarters of a length behind the filly, he worked home well to win the gallop.

They were clocked at 1.52.33, their last 400m in 24.42.

Bart Cummings' Ustinov (Steven Arnold) also worked over a mile. He worked with Miss Meliss and was clocked at 1.56.59 the last 400m in 24.5.

Gai Waterhouse, who breathed a sigh of relief when Assertive Lad (Jim Cassidy) got a start in the Plate, sent the gelding out over 1000m. He was clocked at a comfortable 1.13.28, the last 400m in 27.12.

Godolphin's Grandera stayed at Sandown and Guy Walter's Defier stayed at Ballarat. Guy Walter was reported to be happy enough with Defier, but was keeping a close eye on the weather, believing the horse is better on a firm surface.
