FORM
FACTS
The
2002 Cox Plate is a fitting “World Series” event, with champion New Zealand
mare Sunline striving to equal Kingston Town’s record of 3 Cox Plates.
Australia’s
Champion Racehorse for the past 3 seasons, Sunline has been beaten once over the
2040m at MV – by Northerly in the 2001 Cox Plate. Owned and trained across the
Nullarbor in Western Australia, Northerly backs up from his awesome Caulfield
Cup victory, Rising Prince (1985) the last Cox Plate winner to contest the
Caulfield Cup.
Northerly boasts a 2-0 scoreline over Sunline and is attempting to join her and
8 others as multi Cox Plate winners. New South Wales-trained Defier has had a
Sunline-like campaign, winning the Warwick, Theo Marks and George Main Stks
before his Epsom 5th. In 1999, Sunline won the Warwick, was 2nd in both the Theo
Marks and the George Main and was 4th in the Epsom before taking the Cox Plate.
Defier has a 2-0 superiority over Lonhro, the son of 1995 Cox Plate hero
Octagonal snaring the Yalumba (over Sunline) last start, Northerly winning that
race before his 2001 Cox Plate win. Lonhro represents the multi-State Woodlands/Hawkes
stable, which is to Australia what arguably Godolphin is to the world, the
Dubai-based operation pitting triple G1 winner Grandera against Australia’s
best.
The
home State (Victoria) must rely on brilliant 3yo Bel Esprit, while South
Australia (through Lindsay Park) has the Caulfield Cup runner-up Fields of Omagh.
