 4. Hong Kong Agent Leads Disappointing Breeze Up Sale

01/10/2002

Story By Chris Scholtz

It was no surprise to see Asian buyers drive the market at the Australian 2YO Breeze Up Sale at Newmarket on September 27.

Hong Kong based bloodstock agent Willy Leung took a lead role on his first visit to Australia by securing the top priced lot of the sale, successfully bidding $230,000 for colt by Danehill from Alpine Spirit offered by South Australia’s Lindsay Park Stud.

Alpine Spirit, an unraced daughter of Kenmare, is half sister to the Australian Group winner Schubert, who went on to prove a top a class performer in Hong Kong for the David Hayes stable.

There seems little doubt this colt will also be trained in Hong Kong by Hayes.

Leung also paid $150,000 for a colt by Lion Hunter and $100,000 for a colt by Anabaa

The demand for Danehill’s progeny continues unabated as the absent sire also produced the second highest price of the day, Bloodstock Resources of New Zealand paying $180,000 for his colt from the imported US winner Soon Ripe (by Grey Dawn).

Other overseas buyers came from South Africa and Singapore.

Top priced filly at $170,000, purchased by Warwick Farm trainer Gary Portelli for his client M. Kotzmanek, was a last crop daughter of the late Marscay from the Irish mare Classic Parisian, by Persian Bold.

Classic Parisian, who has already produced the Australian winner Paris Win, is from an impressive European black type family that includes the Group winners Luso, Needle Gun, Cloud Castle, Lucayan Princess and Home Alone.

"She's sensational, just did it so easy in her breeze up and has such a great attitude," Portelli said.

"She's got a lot of residual value with her pedigree and hopefully she can win a decent race."

A total of 90 two year olds were sold for a gross of $4,020,500 at an average price of $44,672, .

However the figures dropped sharply on 2001 when 82 lots sold for $4,861,500 at an average of $59,287.

A disappointing aspect was the high number of passed in lots, some 50 two-year-olds failing to make their reserve.
