HELENUS is on track to etch his name into Widden Stud's Group One honour roll
after his smashing win in the Group Two Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee
Valley.
The son of Helissio turned the three-year-old classic into a one-act affair when
sidling up to his rivals before the turn and sprinting clear to score by three
and a half lengths easing down.
The effortlessness of the colt's win lifted him to favoritism for this
Saturday's $1 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) with trainer Leon Corstens also
earmarking his charge for the Group One Victoria Derby.
Jockey Steven King was exited at what the future holds for Helenus who was only
having his fifth career start.
“I think he has a fantastic future,” the rider said.
“He's very exciting and somewhere down the track he's going to make a very
good horse.
“Whatever he does this spring is a bonus.
He'll be better in the autumn.” Helenus is the latest budding star to emerge
from Widden's nursery, joining a list of luminaries, which have dominated the
Australian racing landscape for more than 130 years.
The Caulfield Guineas, a race that Widden stallion and Champagne Stakes winner
Intergaze was only narrowly touched out of, has long been recognised as a true
test of both speed and endurance.
Helenus will have his chance to join an impressive honour roll, which includes
the likes of Tulloch, Vain, Manikato and Luskin Star.
