 20. Northerly's Dam Dies While Foaling

10/10/2002

The dam of multiple group one winner Northerly, North Bell, died earlier this week in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales.

North Bell, a 14-year-old mare, died while trying to give birth to an overdue foal by Flying Spur.

The foal, reportedly in critical condition, was rushed to an equine veterinary clinic.

North Bell, a winning daughter of Bellwater out of North Fleur, by Far North, was bred by Teton Syndicate. Her first foal, Northern Song, a filly by Rory’s Jester foaled in 1995, won the 2000 Chairman’s Club Stakes (Aus-G3) and placed in five other stakes.

Northerly, a six-year-old gelding by Serheed, was her next foal. To date, he has won six Group 1 races and 14 total stakes, including the 2001 Cox Plate (Aus-G1), and has earned $2,330,565.

North Bell’s fourth foal was North Boy, a four-year-old gelded full brother to Northern Song. North Boy has won four stakes, including the 2001 Ascot Vale Stakes (Aus-G2), and earned $669,589.

North Bell did not produce a foal in 1999, 2000, or 2001.
